I be goin' shortly to the Smoky Mountains where apparently, they have black bears. They explain it's the brown bears I should worry about.

If I see one, do I stroke it or shoot it with my specially purchased American gun.

If you go through Cades Cove you are going to see lots of bears deer turkeys etc. Most of those animals are used to seeing people. Just don't try to feed them and follow the trails and you won't have issues most likely. They don't want to tangle with you anymore than you want to tangle with them so don't chase them and they generally don't chase you.

@Valentine Yes that is a very truthful statement. Also Asheville has a very eclectic arts district. That's pretty much a weekend trip from Knoxville too.

I live surrounded by black bears. They're nothing to worry about. Just leave 'em alone and they'll leave you alone.

@jjoe01 Spending my birthday there. In a log cabin. Picking guitar 😊
Black bears are as common as squirrels ... fast and good sized

Unless you are a calm shooter with a large caliber... do not be shooting bear

When you see them ... they are usually too close ... quietly back up

If you have to shoot ... and they are moving ... use the weapon to create sound, not wounds

You can often scare off black bears

But ... if all fails ... shoot and keep shooting ... it takes a lot to take down a bear.
@TexChik yep. ... I think that is 69 caliber
TexChik · F
@questionWeaver I shot a buck at 160 with mine ..., I prefer my .270 WSM
At 160 ... THAT was a great squeeze

Stay in the car . Brown ones are Grizzlies, they don’t live there ... think they are north and west

Did you smell any ammonia in Tennessee?
Valentine · M
@Tennessee2 you keep telling me things I already know. But not what it has to do with peeps from Tennessee or Alabama. 🙄
Tennessee2 · 80-89, F
@Valentine because Tennesseans produce ammonia and Alabamians do not.
Valentine · M
@Tennessee2 ok. LOL

Leave it alone unless it comes after you. They’re omnivores, they eat more than just meat and aren’t necessarily likely to attack unprovoked.

Brown bears in the front, brown bears out the back.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F

@SW-User It's true.
put the gun down and start feeding the bear your sandwich. LOL

Black bears are pretty timid and keep to themselves mostly. Brown bears are much more territorial. The thing is though if you are being charged by a black bear they chase you up the tree. Browns don't typically climb.

Just remember black bears can be brown and brown bears can be black.
Valentine · M
@MethDozer 😮. That's not really fair, is it.
MethDozer · M
@Valentine Lol, not really.
They do look different still.
