Intel or AMD? [I Love Gaming On Pc]

my BF's birthday is coming up and i wanna get him a gaming pc but i'm not sure about which kind to get him. would i be better off getting an Intel based pc or an AMD based pc? is there that much of a difference?

Whatever you get it's probably not going to be the one he'd prefer.... Why not just give him the offer of the computer and you can go shopping for it together... He gets what he wants and you get to she the excitement

I think this, computers are something gamers can get really picky about, and as @ozgirl512 stated, this way you get to share in his excitement, But i can understand you wanting to have something to give him on the day..so maybe a computer mouse, and then tell him you are both going to get a pc to go with it. What a fantastic gf you are by the way

AMD has much better performance to cost ratio than intel right now, regarding cpus.

I suggest an AMD cpu with an Nvida based gpu.
They pair well together and you get great graphics performance with great CPU performance without breaking the bank for a high end intel cpu.

@FreestyleArt Nothing wrong with AMD cards. but Nvidia has the better value right now, especially with their new 30 series.
@MyaJhonston where were you when I was getting my laptop?
MyaJhonston · 22-25, F
@froggtongue college probably.

For gaming an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X is the sweet spot right now. But I think you have to ask his friends what he likes, because if he is an intel fanboy, then an amd system will make hard time for your relationship. :)
😅 That was some harsh truth in there..@SW-User

Huge difference. If you’re getting a prebuilt PC then you can score a pretty good ryzen system. But if you’re going to build one you’re going to have a hard time getting a GPU for msrp.

But a short answer would be overall AMD has cheaper and better performing CPU’s than intel unless you’re doing intensive research on intel.

But at this moment I would suggest a gaming laptop than an actual PC due to component prices

@MyaJhonston I mean seeing as how a GPU can either run from 500 to 1,200 if you can even manage to check one out is a deciding factor. Anything over 500 and it’s better to check out a gaming laptop because at least you don’t have to buy any additional components but I agree. It’s not impossible but no stone can be left unturned and they might be able to snag a GPU or a CPU with Integrated graphics.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I know right, it’s highway robbery because of the crypto boom, let alone the silicon shortage and scalpers.
MyaJhonston · 22-25, F
@SW-User even with the markup, it's not like you're going to buy another one any time soon.
I had a GTX 660 for 6 years before I decided to upgrade, and the newer cards are ridiculously powerful.
So despite being expensive it's probably a better deal in the long run. plus desktops can be upgraded much more than a laptop over time. that in itself saves money.

AMD Ryzen 5. just got one and it's a little better than intel i7. New egg got better laptops and great deals on gaming laptops
How’s this pan out? My recommendation would have been to take him shopping and let him pick and choose the bits.

It's about the system, not just the CPU. The other stuff to look at: memory capacity and video subsystem. Sometime they play a more pivotal role than the CPU.
MyaJhonston · 22-25, F
@bugeye That's the best choice if you aren't building it yourself.
I think the most complicated part to source will be the board. decide what CPU you want, then research what board you want to use. they very greatly with a wide range of manufacturers. there are good resources on the web for finding the right one within your budget, just takes some searching.

@bugeye Did you look at the cost of a custom solution, vs something like an off the shelf Alienware?
MyaJhonston · 22-25, F
@Northwest I suggest avoiding Alienware.
They tend to add bloatware and jack up prices.
better off getting a custom, and as a plus it's a learning experience into parts that you can use for later buys.

AMD might be the better product
AMD is trouncing Intel right now. Even die hard fan boys are jumping ship.

So yeah if gaming is what is mostly for AMD is a good way to go with the CPU. Unfortunately with the video cards AMD is struggling behind so an Nvidia card is the way to go if it is a Windows based machine.
SatinSecrets · 31-35, M
I got an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and it has been awesome!

Intel licensed AMD back in the 80s to help make their chip because they couldn't keep up with demand. They have long since parted ways and AMD has a good following, but as many have said it is only one piece of the puzzle. Graphics speed and sound will be of critical concern.
Right now as someone who pays very close attention and has for the last 20 years on developments in what happens in this industry AMD, All the way. make certain it has a video card too, likely a nvidia.
@BetweenKittensandRiots Right now an AMD APU makes the most sense. A dedicated GPU is nice but right now just the GPU will cost more than an entire system a year ago. You can be looking at 4x MSRP.
amd has long been the better pricepoint, occasionally you can get a little more performance from intel. if there's an option, I pretty much always get AMD.

AMD is far ahead of Intel right now. But if you're planning on buying a pre-built, decent capable gaming computers with both processors can be found.
Concentrate more on the graphics card. For a gaming PC, that's the bigger issue.
