I Am a Student

One of my assignments is perceptions of childhood, so at the risk of causing debates, what would you say if someone asked you:
1. What is a child
2. What is childhood?

All perceptions welcome as they will all be different depending on personal experiences and understandings. 😀
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Okay now I have an answer. :) But first, I think you should read Beatrice Alemagna's "What is a Child?" From the details I've read, it looks informative and fun. I thought the question is difficult simply because the word definition itself means that it should apply to all children. Even the ages for consideration varies across countries from what I've researched so far. But I did find something that applies to all.

"A child is like a butterfly in the wind.
Some can fly higher than others,
But each one flies the best it can.
Why compare one against the other?
Each one is different.
Each one is special.
Each one is beautiful."

Credits to the writer. I don't really know who she/he is.

@Casheyane i like that. Its a brilliant way to sum up the subject matter 😊 and yeah i'll check out 'what is a child?' thanks
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Yeah :) Well I enjoy research. It's like discovering mysteries and finding out what you need when you can't figure them out on your own. Have fun with your hw!

@Casheyane i enjoy it too, and for some reason ive really gotten into documentaries and stuff recently as well.
Thanks. Its hard work but should be worth it 😊

A child is a person who is small, or who is far away enough to appear small.

A childhood is a small head covering attached to many shirts and jackets.

A+

🙂 not a clear-cut thing. Childhood is the time of innocence and dependence. Some last a long time, some not nearly long enough. "Child" is defined by lots of things, and we don't stop being one all at once...some people in some ways never stop. Sometimes good and sometimes bad depending on what part of the child remains. A child is the center of the universe. The sphere they acknowledge is small, but what they see in that sphere is magic and wonder. Observation is keen, perception skewed as everything is seen as relating to them. From the perspective of the parent, a child is something else altogether. LOL
Skelepop666 · 36-40, F
@JustNik lol i agree with that from a parent point of view.

Child: A pre-adolescent
Childhood: That period from birth to adolescence
Skelepop666 · 36-40, F
@gladewalker brief but sweet 😊
Starsandfire · 31-35, F
Birth to 16 is a child I think.

The period of time where someone is looked after as a dependent, by parents, guardians or other older people. It's kind of a matter of perspective though maybe?
Skelepop666 · 36-40, F
@Starsandfire yeah it does change in perspectives. Not to disagree with you, but you are still considered a legal dependent until you're 18 in some countries, and in a way aren't most people dependent on parents/ older friends and relatives in one way or another until well into adulthood, whether thats through financial support or emotional support? I know my brother is and he's 37, engaged and has 2 kids lol
Starsandfire · 31-35, F
@Skelepop666 maybe there isn't one concrete answer?
Skelepop666 · 36-40, F
@Starsandfire yeah, even if there was it will probably change over time as society develops which is why my tutor keeps pushing for us to research different answers in as many ways as we can. I appreciate all input i get with this assignment 😊

@imLobo thanks for that input. Its a very valid thought especially if you consider the variation in age of consent/ marriage

A child is someone you love unconditionally and forever, you try to protect them yet prepare them for life, hoping they will never know pain physical or emotional but being there to help them thru it, Using your own life experiences to make their road less bumpy. But still letting them take their own road and enjoy being a child, putting their needs before yours, always and forever.

Childhood...something you make sure a child has better than the one you had.
Skelepop666 · 36-40, F
@Bushmanoz thank you for your input.
in that case, if its forever, in your opinion when does a person stop being a child?
Bushmanoz · 61-69, M
@Skelepop666 To a dad, that's really hard to say. I see them as adults now, yet they will always be my children. It goes by in the blink of an eye, but I can still see them as the children they were.Im sure someone can articulate it better, especialy as its 2am and Im lucky yo be forming sentences at all. good luck with your assignment
Skelepop666 · 36-40, F
@Bushmanoz oh wow. You articulated well especially at 2am and unprepared for such a conversation 😊
