I just discovered something awesome!

I have hard water in my area, and this does not bode well for my marble sinks. Around the faucets, there are always white marks from the hard water. So I sprayed some white vinegar on the white stains and left it there for a few minutes. And voila! I wiped it off with a paper towel, and the white stains were gone. Sooooo happy!!! 😃🥳🙌🏼☺️😊
Be careful, marble is one of the softest stones around.

Yes , vinegar will work , because its acidic and eats into the marble. And marble is porus, so if you do it repeatedly it can eat away at your marble.

Best bet ...either diluted hydrogen peroxide , or a fine polish, like a glass polish.

But always rinse clean afterwards .

And here's a tip.

Once clean , apply a car wax.
Let it dry anms you would if you were waxing your car .

(Make sure you get a clear wax)
This will give your marble a protective layer so stains can be wiped off , like if you use the above mixture without damaging the marble underneath .

The wax also hides minor scratches.

It needs to be repeated every few weeks to keep up the protective layer .

Microfibre cloths are also wonderful .

There are many types.

If you get one made for glass , it works well.

And remember...micro fibre is to be used wet, but wrung out. If you use it sodden, its fibres are not free to pick up the contamination.

Hope this helps.

I've had HEAPS of experience cleaning....and this is the method I eventually decided upon .

Also...if the marble is dark , use the HP sparingly.

You can also polish marble with common chalk ground up and mixed with water (and a smidge of detergent)...this is also the first thing you should really try on the stain ....general cleaning rule : work from gentlest cleaning method first.

@BoobooSnafu Thanks! So helpful. 😊

It's a really good window cleaner too!

@SW-User Yes!

Yes! Try a spray bottle with 1/2 white vinegar, 1/2 warm water & a squirt of dawn dish soap to clean your showers. Amazing.
marsbar · F
@QueenOfTheNerds Oh interesting about the almond oil.
atlantic59 · 61-69, M
@QueenOfTheNerds does the oil not retain bacteria type-I'm just curious. I oil my cast iron pans, but I never heard of that for a sink. I'm not up on this

Plus I'm allergic to nuts, and people say I am

Gotta be careful with marble because acids can etch it. It may clean but over time it could cause etching, and marble is not cheap to replace.
marsbar · F
@cherokeepatti Ok. I’ll have to look into that more.

We have hard water too so white vinegar is a must. Put a splash in your dishwasher for cleaner glasses too.
marsbar · F
@SageWanderer Ohhh good tip!

I... thought vinegar would dissolve marble.
@marsbar ah, ok.

The thing with working with abrasives and marble , is that fine particles of the abrasive can sorta etch into the stone.

And lucky you, you have two TOTALLY different colours. 😄

Maybe not try the fine steel wool on the light one just in case .

Toothpaste on a cotton cloth, or even dampened kitchen paper is a SUPERFINE abrasive....a.polish really .
If its not strong enough to get out the stain, it might help reduce the scratching or dullness you might get after using the baking soda or S.wool.
Use it as a polish after the above products.

Sometimes you have to treat stains on marble like the duco on a car ...you have to actually cut in , and polish out .

And if you need to do this....you don't want to keep doing it every time .

That's where the wax protection comes in .

There are now liquid ceramic coatings you can buy for stone that protect it .

Not cheap , but I don't know how much a hard water filter is by comparison.

Marble is sorta high maintenance, but it is beautiful.

@BoobooSnafu Thanks for the tips. I’ll try again later this week.

Hmmm....... water hardness can be a problem with water heaters. You might want to get it tested and consider a water softener.
marsbar · F
@Shutterbug That would be the best solution, but the expense is too much right now.
Coldplay · 56-60, M
We did the water softener too. But the vinegar is a great solution that really does a good job!
marsbar · F
@Coldplay I wish this house came with a water softener.

@marsbar would be nice!!!

What do you use for soap? When I visit my son, the hard water is awful....
marsbar · F
@fun4us2b Soft Soap for washing hands & Irish Spring in shower
fun4us2b · M
@marsbar Thanks, I will try that next time I visit him!
