I just discovered something awesome!

I have hard water in my area, and this does not bode well for my marble sinks. Around the faucets, there are always white marks from the hard water. So I sprayed some white vinegar on the white stains and left it there for a few minutes. And voila! I wiped it off with a paper towel, and the white stains were gone. Sooooo happy!!! 😃🥳🙌🏼☺️😊

I... thought vinegar would dissolve marble.

@CelestiaStella Two plumbers told me to try that.
@marsbar be careful marsy ...use it diluted if you're going to.

@BoobooSnafu Thank you 😇

@CelestiaStella Vinegar will, little by little dissolve marble. At the concentrations we're talking about here, it make take hundreds of years to do it, but the most immediate effect, is that marble will become dull and lose its luster. Baking Soda will also handle the white spots, but it has the same effect as vinegar. Best remedy is to be diligent about drying off water drops. Or installing a whole-house filtration system (what I did).

@Northwest I’ll try baking soda next.
@marsbar careful, that's also an abrasive. Don't use it very often, it can dull your marble.

It acts like a course grained polish.

So ....be very gentle using it .

It works....but its basically like sanding off the surface of your marble.

@BoobooSnafu Ugh! It’s so hard to find something that works & won’t cause issues. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I just got steel wool 0000. It’s supposed to be super fine that it won’t cause scratches.
@marsbar have you tried toothpaste?
@marsbar hey , if its bad staining ....sometimes you just have to do what you have to do .

And remember, if fine scratches happen, at a later date when you have time , you can polish them back out .

Better fine scratches than acid leech.

Fine scratches are fixable.

Polishing is just very time consuming, but a good arm workout 😁

What colour is your marble?
marsbar · F
@BoobooSnafu Haven’t tried toothpaste yet.

In one bathroom, it’s a greenish black & in the other, it’s a light beige.
@marsbar ah, ok.

The thing with working with abrasives and marble , is that fine particles of the abrasive can sorta etch into the stone.

And lucky you, you have two TOTALLY different colours. 😄

Maybe not try the fine steel wool on the light one just in case .

Toothpaste on a cotton cloth, or even dampened kitchen paper is a SUPERFINE abrasive....a.polish really .
If its not strong enough to get out the stain, it might help reduce the scratching or dullness you might get after using the baking soda or S.wool.
Use it as a polish after the above products.

Sometimes you have to treat stains on marble like the duco on a car ...you have to actually cut in , and polish out .

And if you need to do this....you don't want to keep doing it every time .

That's where the wax protection comes in .

There are now liquid ceramic coatings you can buy for stone that protect it .

Not cheap , but I don't know how much a hard water filter is by comparison.

Marble is sorta high maintenance, but it is beautiful.

@BoobooSnafu Thanks for the tips. I’ll try again later this week.
