@Harriet03 Re. God-squadding, funnily enough this hasn't always been the case (for example mediaeval people of all classes not merely bathed and saw each other naked, but in mixed company). The only remnant of the great middle ages' bathing culture left is the sauna in the north.
It all changed not because of the Church particularly (though rigid protestants probably deserve some blame), but because of climate change - the start of the Little Ice Age - which saw more wood being burned just to stay warm than to heat water.
Anyway, digression, but until that point, neither the Church nor anyone else had much of a problem with in-context nipple-baring. It's only since then we've somehow got the idea that it's inherently bad, ingrained.
I blame the Victorians and/or the Enlightenment. Most stuff is their fault!
They pretty much can, there are only 3 states remaining who have women can't go topless laws. Cities who have them tend to loose in court when people push it. Mostly it is that they don't want to go topless.
Do you want other men seeing your daughter topless? Your niece? Your wife?
The patriarchy isn't just men's rampaging hormones. It's also about possessiveness, jealousy, and a general belief that they know what is better for women.
@DearAmbellina2113 that's a separate issue I think we need to get over. "I don't want to" is perfectly acceptable to me. But "I would if I was X" where X is a subjective cultural view of body type is a thing I'd like to see us evolve beyond.
