What do you think?

So I was thinking, why don't we set wages based upon the profits of a business? Like the more money a business earns for the fiscal year, the higher the wages of the workers? Wouldn't this encourage workers to give their best and hang on to a job? It would also mean more fair wages for the amount of work done and somewhat close the separation of wealth between the upper class and lower class. What do you guys think?

ESOPs, Employee Stock Ownership Plans, give workers the kinds of motivations you speak of. The workers are not just employees, but also owners. But someone who knows the details better than I do could speak better of this subject.

Eh. I think if they did away with salary or made it more realistic interms of pay to work. Like I work more than 12hrs a day and I make less than some dude flipping burgers making 12$ an hour

@Prometheus careful what you wish for, Amazon saved a bunch of money by giving all employees raises... no more bonuses and stricter break and absentee rules

Eh. I figure it's a little different for me since I'm in the military..so it's hurry up and wait..or we are busy busy with stuff going on all the time. I wouldn't mind a change but I'm content because I am not knowledge enough about economics and how it all works to give a opinion worth anything

and make every company have profit sharing
Madhatter · 31-35, M
@MarineBob Of course. If a company loses profits, the workers are partially responsible for that and should suffer a decrease in wages. I think that's necessary for continued encouragement to give their best.

@Madhatter the past 30 day my business posted a big loss because of the shutdown so they would have suffered to
Madhatter · 31-35, M
@MarineBob Hmm, I see your point. Still, taking a loss like that would still bring company solidarity, I think. And hopefully motivate people to be less tolerable of pointless government shutdowns and other childish shenanigans.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
noble goal, though somewhat difficult to implement...

first we'd need to outlaw and eliminate greedy labor unions... which serve no practical purpose in modern society
Madhatter · 31-35, M
@wildbill83 I do think government jobs would have to be exempt from this idea. Those jobs are too important and our nation always operates at a loss.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@MarineBob the trouble with federal and state is that they're good at creating useless, unnecessary jobs that pay 40-50k+ a year...

when I worked for NCDENR, there was the woman that everyone referred to as the "sign police"; the entirety of her job consisted of driving around to all the parks in the district with a ruler and making sure all the park signs were properly constructed, a certain height off the ground, a certain size/type of font, etc. and probably made 50k a year doing it... 🙄
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
Politicians, and Congressmen/women are even worse, dozens of personal aids that follow them around like lost puppies who proverbially wipe their asses for them, and make six figures a year...

We could just go back to the system that worked so well before the greediest among us decided they didn't want to wait for windfall profits:

Stop doing everything you can to only increase shareholder value.
Invest in R&D.
Invest in your employees.

Of course, this will never happen, because that's not what they're talking about when they say "we want to take America back to the good ol' days".
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
I think that's a wonderful idea.
Eternity · 26-30, M
That would make too much sense
walabby · 61-69, M
Are you sure that wouldn't just encourage companies to hide their profits? They already do that to avoid tax...
lorne13 · 61-69, M
i suspect that companies would lie about the profits
