Will it be possible to heal the extreme polarization and political division in the United States? How could healing be accomplished?

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
When the truth is revealed as to why things are happening we might have a good chance. There are some evil people in this world doing nearly unimaginably evil things and it needs to be stopped.

The amount of people who think the division is to be blamed on one "side" that needs to be destroyed is proof that the division is nowhere near healing. If you're advocating more division to solve division, then you're very far from a solution.

Step one is to stop thinking the division is the fault of one side. Recognize your own "tribe" in its role in fostering division. If you can only blame "them" then you're missing the forest for the trees. Looking inward is key. Acknowledge the ways that you and the people who agree with you dehumanize those who see the world differently from you, seeing them as "evil" when they're just trying to live their lives like anyone else.

When we can see other people as people and not as political labels, statistics, or some kind of malicious force, then we can start healing.

Like hate often is, a lot of it is fueled by ignorance. The media are masters at de-humanizing their targets, and creating division. I think if everyone would turn off the lying "news" and talk to each other, and really listen, they would realize that we are all still just people, just trying to live our lives the best we can.

@AbbeyRhode You've got that right. Brainwashing is a real thing.
AbbeyRhode · F
@4meAndyou It really is. I still remember how shocked and horrified I felt when I woke up from it. People have to listen to the truth.

Maybe an economic boom. If everyone...and I mean everyone, feels a lot better off then divisions begin to disappear.
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
@Sicarium Why do you think I'm angry?
Sicarium · 46-50, M
@TheConstantGardener I got no idea. If you've got a consistent point to make, make it. If not, stop arguing. But don't get mad at me for not following the inconsistencies.
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
@Sicarium I'm not angry I'm just bored.🤷🏻‍♂️
MildlyInappropriate · 51-55, M
The tone is set at the top. If we have a leader who seeks to unite us, we'll move down that path. The current POTUS seems to prefer to keep the US divided, so I don't see it happening under his tenure as president.
MildlyInappropriate · 51-55, M
😂👍️ to you as well! @eli1601
eli1601 · 70-79, M
@MildlyInappropriate I understand how you can feel that way. He punches back, and anyone who is predominantly 'collectivist' is going to see it as divisive. His detractors and opponents did something before he even threw his hat in the ring that makes Watergate look like a parking ticket. The conspiratorial crimes against him and this nation by the democrat power elite is unprecedented in insidiousness. It is going to come out, and it will be very interesting when it does.

Nope, any chance we may have had was destroyed by Obama.
@Carla That is above and beyond the horrendous things he and his syndicate did to this country during his eight years of stagnation.
monte3 · 70-79, M
@puck61 congratulations you do have a genuine oaf in the White House. 😊
And I respectfully disagree nearly 100% about Obama. What are some specific “dog whistles” he sounded?

52 million light themselves on fire in protest. The sun darkens for a while. CNN goes off the air. Michael Moore flees to Canada. Canada sends him back. The rubble is carted away. Rebuilding commences. All is swell

@DukeOfEarle Pray brother! Pray with tears and sackcloth and ashes!!!!!!!!!!
Sicarium · 46-50, M
Not likely. There's too much moralizing, too many people are willing to sacrifice all principles to win, and everyone who disagrees is evil, sub-human scum. Some kind of armed conflict is probably inevitable.
@Sicarium I launch vitriolic rants against the progressive power elite, the media, academia, Silicone valley, and the entertainment industry, who promote an ideology I see as the deepest evil, but I try to remember that the vast majority of us want basically the same things, and heroes still come from both sides of the aisle. I mean 'when it comes down to brass tacks' people who disagree vehemently with me can be just as noble and honorable as those who agree.

Thinking back in time, prior to Trump, I never recall a time when we had such extreme polarization, and that tells me that a large segment of our population is being used by the political machine through propaganda.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
Close down the internet for a month or two. Blow up the satellites and done. Everything will be back to normal somewhat
That will wake up Skynet and cause the rise of the machines sooner. @FreestyleArt
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Probably not right now.
Though imagine how different people would be if social media/news sources and the internet shut down for just 1 week.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
You need your own Nelson Mandela who speaks of peace and reconciliation. A person who has learned empathy by taking a lot of hard knocks in life. Someone who most people can love and look to with admiration because of what he/she has been through.

Did I manage to sound like a soothsayer ?
@Wraithorn The end of Apartheid was a jagged little pill. It needed to happen , yet it solidified the basis for what some might call "scientific racism". It's too bad it could not have evolved in a cleaner; less incriminating, way........
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@puck61 True that. It was a big step in the right direction though.
It seems though that some solutions to problems need to evolve. Some things help us up to a certain point and then they can become limiting. That is when it needs to evolve or be left behind.
I'm going to be snarky and say that religion is another example of this.
🤭
@Wraithorn I can't argue with that. Religion is either salvation or damnation depending on who wields it . Most of humanity cannot handle religion well.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Not anytime soon.
Carla · 61-69, F
It will. We all know that this will break. The current leadership will age out. The melting pot will continue to cook.
No civil wars, no implosion.
It will take a young moderate. A cleaned up version of bill clinton, maybe....

Yes, people need to accept each other and acknowledge a shared culture and values
Possibly, once critical mass is reached by enough people in the US waking up and realising that the threats posed to their way of life by the effects of climate change dwarf any other perceived threats they face.
@Discotheque I appreciate humor, and I deserve the same comments that I often dish out! Thank you!
@Discotheque [c=#BF0000]That reminds me! There has been a cholera outbreak in Los Angeles, and they are worried about a potential bubonic plague outbreak. The "progressives" are blaming climate change while they ignore 40 foot mountains of trash and feces and used needles in the streets! It's hilarious and tragic at the same time![/c]
