Will it be possible to heal the extreme polarization and political division in the United States? How could healing be accomplished?

You need your own Nelson Mandela who speaks of peace and reconciliation. A person who has learned empathy by taking a lot of hard knocks in life. Someone who most people can love and look to with admiration because of what he/she has been through.

@Wraithorn The end of Apartheid was a jagged little pill. It needed to happen , yet it solidified the basis for what some might call "scientific racism". It's too bad it could not have evolved in a cleaner; less incriminating, way........

@puck61 True that. It was a big step in the right direction though.
It seems though that some solutions to problems need to evolve. Some things help us up to a certain point and then they can become limiting. That is when it needs to evolve or be left behind.
I'm going to be snarky and say that religion is another example of this.

@Wraithorn I can't argue with that. Religion is either salvation or damnation depending on who wields it . Most of humanity cannot handle religion well.
