Real life experience vs book knowledge

Would you say its better to learn about life through hands on real life experince or to listen to what others say and read/study ? And why ?

Experience is often the better Teacher.
@Picklebobble2 you mean like the school of hard knocks? (valedictorian class of '81) lol

@DropTopDig No just that, for example, you can study a language and learn about it that way. OR you can immerse yourself in the life and learn how it's used, it's nuances for different situations etc.

Learners fall into various categories so whatever suits the individual is best for them. With that said, traditional skills are best learnt through experience, good mentoring and by observing. Other learning needs a more conceptual approach that requires study and critical thinking.

Both are important. You won't learn about molecules, nutrition, or cell function without reading what others have studied. But you also can't learn social interactions, compassion, or empathy without experience.
@BigAssLeech Science is cumulative. We have the advantage of learning from the past.

I done got all my learnin' from books and now I live in a van down by the river!

It depends. It's all about considering the source. If a true expert says "This is what it is" you can use that to inform yourself. But when it comes to learning about life that's a pretty personal experience. I'd definitely say that people who are well read have additional context. But there's also a danger, for some, in leaning on the opinions of others too much.

Experience over book smarts everytime.

Life hand on Gives you a perspective on you. Books give you perspective on others,
One needs to have both and know how to mix them together to become a better person

If it’s my accountant or lawyer, I want the reading and studying to be paramount. If it’s a contractor, the only acceptable knowledge is hands on experience

So-called "real-life experiences" are random and irrelevant. The truth is in books, not in the things you happen to experience.
I strive to live in reality and accept evidence over anecdotes.

@BlueSkyKing Dang, I'm gonna remember that! That's a good anecdote!
@hunkalove If it’s not science, it’s superstition.

@BlueSkyKing Sounds like bad luck, alrighty.
Both important but tacit knowledge by definition cannot be learned through books because it is not codified

Have you ever experienced the Earth as a spinning ball, or have you only ever seen it through a TV screen?
Both are valuable. But, book smarts will never beat hands on experience

I mean both I guess

real learning is hands on real life - you can't master anything without practicing and learning from your failures
