Real life experience vs book knowledge

Would you say its better to learn about life through hands on real life experince or to listen to what others say and read/study ? And why ?

If it’s my accountant or lawyer, I want the reading and studying to be paramount. If it’s a contractor, the only acceptable knowledge is hands on experience
