Can you believe that my brother and his wife feed their maid and gardener only bread for lunch ?

I'm looking after by bro's house while they are away. The maid and gardener are working here today so I asked them what they normally eat for lunch. The reply from both of them was, "Bread".
That's bullsh*t ! I gave them both chicken, rice and gravy.
When my bro comes back next week then we are going to have a chat about Human rights I think.
Just bread is like 1980's Apartheid nonsense !

Here most people are expected to take their own lunch when they work a job. I worked for a car lot and one of my duties was to cook lunch and it was for everyone...the mechanic, the other employees and the boss. They didn't have to eat it if they didn't want to but they usually did. The boss doesn't want to eat lunch unless everyone else has lunch. We had a variety of meals including grilled chicken, hamburger, steak, stew, soups, chicken & rice, etc. Sometimes I'd make a Mexican meal at home (enchiladas, Spanish rice, salsa for chips, sofapilla cheesecake) and bring it. Also cooked turkey dinners a few times.

@cherokeepatti That sounds great. In SA maids and gardeners get little money so it is basically accepted tradition that the employer provides lunch. Just bread is not lunch, that's an insult. I will definitely chat to my bro about this. It's like a basic Human rights issue.

I worked in a private nursing home for a time, and the owner used to provide food for the nurses, CNA's and others. We were allowed to eat the leftovers from the patient's meals, and if there was not enough of that, there was always a big tub of tuna salad in the fridge in the break room, along with free loaves of bread, free coffee, free cereal, and free soda.

@4meAndyou Well darn, that sounds fine. Tuna salad is good stuff.

@Wraithorn It was great. Canned tuna (or even canned chunk chicken) is usually cheap and easy to fix. Americans eat a lot of peanut butter, also, because it is so cheap, and there is the old fall back, grilled cheese.

One summer I had to feed my sister-in-law's children, and it was and extra expense I could not afford because I wasn't working that summer, so we ate a lot of ramen noodle soup and peanut butter sandwiches.

@4meAndyou Nothing wrong with peanut butter. My favourite is called Black Cat because it contains peanuts only, I love cats and I like Gothic things. So I only ever buy Black Cat. 🐱

South Africa 🇿🇦?

Yep you’re right, the world is changing and that’s sadly very closed minded 😕

I’m not surprised. I would wonder about it too. You have a great deal of empathy 😎 hope it goes away ok and you all come to a mutual understanding without further issues.

I saw this kind of thing myself when i lived in SA. It bothered me greatly tbh. Including the “whites only” sign outside the public library

That was ages ago now tho @Wraithorn

@SW-User Yeah...I was a policeman during the Apartheid yrs and as a result many people just assume that I'm a racist pig. In fact, being a cop taught me the opposite of that.
SW-User
Ppl and their assumptions, urgh so lame 😒 @Wraithorn
SW-User
Wtf ? That's abuse !

@Wraithorn That's sickening your brother and his wife have mental issues. That's evil , why don't they put themselves in her place? She should even bring her own food because a piece of bread is not a meal. I'm sure it's not your brother but his wife that's giving the bread.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Maybe...I don't know. I'll have a chat with them when they get back from holiday. They need to hear some critisism from a family member I think.
SW-User
I'm glad you're not going to stay silent about this . @Wraithorn

Good for you. At least you have a good heart x

SW-User
