How Do You Counteract Depression?

What are the simple things you do or use to help combat feeling low?
I am a college student that lives in a single room and would like to know how to prepare for winter, the time of year I seem to always be lowest and I'm already feeling it.

- Have a workout routine, or a couple. You can just do a calisthenics push up one on youtube if you don't have room for equipment. Make yourself jog once or more a week, it'll make you feel good and you'll be glad you accomplished something even if its not far. At the very least try and get out on a walk every day. It'll give you endorphins and a sense of pride.

- Have different hobbies eg. for me I learn piano, play guitar, learning card tricks, video games, working out. Things you can progress at.

- Don't get in a crap sleep cycle where you wake up late and sleep morning.

- Try and accomplish something small every day so you're not stagnant.

- Eat well, or just don't eat like shit or you'll feel like shit.

- Avoid drugs and avoid drinking to excess, it'll throw your chemicals out of whack and make your moods less stable. (Treat your body like crap, feel like crap).

- Have a plan and know where you're going in life at least in the medium term.

- Don't engage with negative people, don't sulk, always be your best self.

- Don't do things that make you dissapointed in yourself, do the opposite.

A bit general near the end but that's mostly how I conquered a 10 year bout of depression so take what you will from those.

-Exercise works the best for me.
-Going out in the sun—in the winter I use a SAD light.
-Keeping up a basic routine even when I just want to sleep and cry.

@summersong Thank you :) Yes, I'm finding it hard to resist the temptation to just crawl up in a ball and wish to disappear

Am sorry to hear that. You are not alone. What works for me is to try to stick to my usual routine, get outside as much as possible, even though winter is colder and darker. Try to spend time in nature, a walk or cycle in the park or forest or whatever is close by. Try to keep engaging with friends and family. Try not to drink too much alcohol.

Just a few ideas. Take care. 😊
Invest in better lighting. Sounds too simple.............but it works.

Exercise and hydration! Both big keys for me. Also, a proper diet. :)
