I hate politics and don't want a debate but I have a question

My family is very, very Republican, and I remember right after Obama got elected they couldn't believe how dumb Obama was being by doing the stimulus packages to save all those businesses..
But now trump's sending everyone checks.
They love trump and everything that guy does is right to them, so they're all "oh yes. Trumps doing the right thing by sending ebetyone checks."
Isn't this basically the same damn thing as what Obama did? Except it's going to people instead of businesses.
Also, a aren't republicans the ones who like big businesses?
I'm confused.

There are many more benefits going to businesses in addition to the checks. But at the end of the day, when someone strongly identifies with a political party their rational thought goes out the window and an "Us vs Them" mentality sets in.

It's a stimulus package, basically the same, but this one is going to be a hell of a lot bigger, than the Obama era stimulus package, which BTW, was agreed on wen Bush was President, but the GOP does not remember that.

It's socialism, if it's done under a Democrat, and the right thing to do, if done by Trump.
@Northwest I wouldn't go that far, I'm generally a trump supporter and kinda hate many parts of it
You can get in the weeds talking about philosophies and the like, but Trump, like Obama, is (IMO finally and why he's doing it is another topic entirely) trying to do his job and serve the country as a whole, much like Obama did.

Our country and economy is neither exclusively privately capitalist nor socialist, and imo, the role of government is in part, to protect us both from external threats and from ourselves.

Trump, and McConnell, neither of whom I have much love for, like Obama, and countless others in our country's history like FDR, seem to be trying to reevaluate political ideologies to adapt to current realities.

We can debate whether checks, be they tax rebates or handouts are the appropriate measures for government to take, but as long as most of us agree that the government should do something and not nothing in the face of a crisis, there's hope.

Look at it this way. Reagan said government is the problem, and not the solution. But he was really ONLY talking with respect to a particular circumstance. Back in the day, he had no problem with the New Deal.
@MistyCee hmm interesting perspective. Thank you for commenting.

Your very, very Republican family will always find a way to justify their beliefs. And that's because they're based on belief. Not fact. Unless your Republican family is making more than seven figures a year...they're being duped. But if it ends up that they get a check from the government you might want to make sure they rip it up. Because that's Socialism with a capital "S."
@Ynotisay that's what I thought, 🤷‍♀️ but again, I'm not very knowledgeable about politics, so I wanted to make sure I was understanding everything correctly.
BlueVeins · 22-25
Your assessment is correct. I will say that the situation is a bit different in that Obama worked to regulate banks while Trump did the opposite, but the "bailouts" are essentially the same.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@boklenholley7 There were, I reckon. They got repealed in the latter half of the 20th century iirc.
@BlueVeins interesting thank you for answering my dumb questions! XD
BlueVeins · 22-25
@boklenholley7 smart questions, smarty

It really is complex, but as @KenjiHarima, said, they are different emergencies at different times. This is only one part of it. Another is: two people do exactly the same thing, but one you like, and one you don’t. You tend to be more forgiving (and may even see it more favorably), when it’s the one you like. It’s human nature. That’s why the Left hate Trump, and criticize him for doing something good...something they themselves wanted to happen...until Trump accomplished it. They say love is blind, and so it is, but so is hate.
@Carissimi I love that last line. It's so true. Thank you for responding.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Carissimi By and large “the left” is not criticizing Trump for finally waking up and doing something. It’s overdue.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
A question was asked. I gave my answer. I’m not here for a political argument. Can’t you people just take a rest from all the arguing. @QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Yes. Your family is kind of dumb about this stuff, it happens.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul We bow down to your superior intellect
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 You should. Now wear a helmet.
It is a type of thing called cognitive offloading. You basically use something or someone else to think for you. That is why people can't get out of their parties. Think back to school when some students just barely made it. Thinking it literally hard work for some people and they would rather someone else to do it for them.
@canusernamebemyusername hmm. That makes sense. I'll have to read more on cognitive offloading. Thank you!
@boklenholley7 You are welcome.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
I think your confusion comes down to a simple matter of stereotypes.

But also there's a difference in the types of emergencies being handled at different times.
@AuRevoir true. Haha I like debates and civilized convos like these comments. Never seems to be anything but shouting in politics.
But... I'm kinda a shit stirer with the family I've been talking about. Don't care for politics, but throw in one jab at just the right moment and watch the room explode. 😂 so funny. People getting riled up over random crap.
AuRevoir · 36-40, M
@boklenholley7 Yeah I mostly would rather just listen to others these days. 👀 I feel like there's more for me to learn from listening than hearing myself speak too often anyway.

🤷‍♀️ Plus my opinion on combining different political ideologies to create a super policy of government seems to be unpopular anyhow.
@AuRevoir I fully agree. Though I can't learn much from my family, I feel I've learned a lot just from asking this question. 😅
Lol sounds like an interesting though, though.
It's exactly the same thing. I personally don't care for the lump sum check idea. There are better more responsible ways to do it.
@boklenholley7 in simplest terms just expansion of unemployment claims.

Why give every single person a check whether they have been previously working or not? If they haven't been working for any length of time then they're not losing income because of this.

It'll be short term anyway as most who are laid off have a job to go back to when this is over with.

$1200 isn't really much. And won't last long enough to make a difference.
Ynotisay · M
@Callmewhatyouwill I agree with you. It's almost nonsensical. For a lot of people that money is gone in five minutes to pay off creditors, typical bills or a small percentage of their rent or mortgage. And then what?
@Callmewhatyouwill huh. That sounds reasonable. Thank you for your input (:
I can't speak for your family - but when President Obama did it, it was good, and when President Trump does it, it's good.

Good is good.
@Mamapolo2016 so it's basically the same thing to you too?
@boklenholley7 Yes. We have come to the point where we can't see the forest of actions because of the trees of ideology.

It's sad and silly.
@Mamapolo2016 thank you for your input. (:
It’s called “yay, team” politics. Basically, the other guy does it, he’s an idiot. Our guy does it, it’s a brilliant idea. Trump was just as critical of Obama, even though what he did helped turn businesses around and began the employment upturn Trump’s been taking credit for all this time.
@bijouxbroussard that's kind of what I thought it was. I'm not big into politics at all, so I just wanted to make sure I was ignorantly missing something.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard I suspect that Trump will f##k this up though.
SW-User
Whatever help people can get is a good thing no matter what the party is ...
@SW-User I fully agree.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
Hey, where do I go to get one of those checks? I have not received mine yet
Did you just delete my shit?
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout 🤷‍♀️ i said I didn't want a debate. That includes random shit talking unrelated the Q.
