what you think about ottoman empire?

was it the greatest empire?
SW-User
No. I vote for the Mongolian empire so vast so quickly
SW-User
@YukikoAmagi I do not disagree but he had a habit if a city didn't surrender he would kill everyone including old, young etc.
@SW-User [c=#359E00]as far as i know how the Mongol and Chinese waging war, they will send employ to the ruler of a city to demand surrender and their life will be spared, if they insist to fight then there will be no mercy. Exception is punitive expedition where they won't sent employ and actually seek for destruction[/c]
SW-User
@YukikoAmagi he had a signal based on the colour of his tent I believe. If it went red the city surrounded knew there would be no mercy.

They forced the children of the places they invaded to serve in their army. They took them as slaves after murdering their families.

And each Sultan has hundrends of women, many teen girls as sexual slaves. And yet whenever they mention the collapse of their Islamic empire Arabs attribute it to women intervening in rule? It had nothing to do with excessive indulgence in sex and wealth?

It had nothing to do with the fact that they banned printed books by the time Europe was flourishing scientifically? all because the Quran was not "mushakal" in the printed version. No Arabic vowels in westerner printers at the time.

There is no empire in history that was great in a moral sense.

To me, the greatest empire of them all is the Roman Empire. Here's why:

1. They united the Mediterranean world. They made the Mediterranean world one culture, united in diversity. (1500 years after the fall of the Roman Empire it is still not possible to travel around the Mediterranean without problems!)

2. The Empire changed over time. Nothing was static. Culture was evolving and developing all the time. Compare the culture of Late Antiquity with the culture of Julius Caesar and you know what I mean. Huge change!

3. They were open-minded (until Christianity took over). Nobody was forced to believe in a certain deity. The Roman Empire was multi-cultural.

4. The Romans accepted superior cultures. Hellenism became the de-facto philosophy, and Greek became the de-facto lingua franca of the Empire, at least in its Eastern parts.

5. They were the first to develop a separation of forces. Legislative, administrative and judicial authorities were clearly separated (more or less at least).

There are more points, but I'll leave it at this. If I had a choice I would want to live in the 2nd century AD, in the Roman Empire, and study Greek geometry and astronomy.

The fact that it collapsed might be a clue
helenS · 36-40, F
@MissTaken Everything will collapse, sooner or later. The Roman Empire collapsed.
MissTaken · 36-40, F
@helenS Yes I know - America is already on its way 😂
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
@helenS The roman empire was heavily flawed in it that it did not provide the romans with the human basic needs of normalcy and peace. People were born for war and that is not a sustainable way to live... so.. bad example imo

They had their good times and bad. It's funny to think that there was a time that they were one of the the most religiously tolerant place in the world. When the Jews were being chased out of everywhere, the Ottomans took them in. But nobody stays on top of their game forever. The greatest? No. But they weren't a bad lot. They were good for kicking the shit out of religious fanatics, atleast at one time they were.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Allelse … and similarly in Spain under Arab rule. It was the most tolerant and enlightened place in Western Europe, before Christian fanatics reconquered it.
How things change!

The British Empire, the sun never set on it.
SW-User
I haven't given it much thought. Until I have my coffee this morning, I still won't.

The greatest empire is the one still standing and thriving.
SW-User
@SW-User but they all die its the nature of all things. Will we see great empires ruled by a single ruler across large parts of the world again?

Surprised this hasn't been upper most in your thoughts though 😉😉
SW-User
@SW-User lol. Yes, they all eventually die or morph into something else. It's why I responded as I did. They may be interesting to analyze and delve into, but none can be labeled the greatest.
plungesponge · 41-45, M
It wasn't as great as the Empire that Jesse Smollett was in.

Here's a map of the Ottoman Empire in 1683. It contained large parts of Europe at the time. Its northern border was close to Vienna.
North Africa (the Maghreb), Arabia, Central Europe - parts of the Ottoman Empire. Many contemporary states have been set up by the winners of WWI out of the bankrutcy assets of that empire, such as Syria and Iraq.

I don't think about. No definitely not even close
*forefathers turn in their graves*
Well it was one of the most powerful empires of its day. There are lots of empires that were very powerful or even great that are no longer around today. It doesn’t diminish their impact in history.
[c=#359E00]contrary to popular belief i choose Mongolian Empire as the best Empire. Ottoman is not that great, in Muslim history the best government is Rashidun Caliphate, next time choose Rashidun Caliphate instead of Ottoman[/c]
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
It was pretty good. They made great rugs.

I would argue that all the empires were bad but they did have some accidental positive side effects.

And I thought it was a furniture store, lol.

SW-User

@SW-User They'll have another sale here for Fourth of July.
Cierzo · M
The greatest one, not at all. One of the cruellest ones, for sure. Ask people in the countries they conquered.
dondon · M
No it was smaler than the roman empire I think.
Lets say the mongol empire was the greatest.
YMITheWayIM · 46-50, M
Mera Sultan went a little too far while dramatizing some of it.
Newman · 26-30, M
Are you Muslim that you think it was the greatest empire
NeoNeo · 41-45, M
There is nothing great about it.
amrit19901990 · 31-35, M
i never hear this name
SW-User
nah, China
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
I can admit there were great achievements, but sadly it's completely overshadowed by it's horrific treatment of its subjects, particularly the Armenians and Assyrians during the Armenian Genocide.
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
It was a sinful empire so no. The greatest empire was probably lead by Jonas.

Or David! 😄

No.. actually... king Salomon 🤔🤔🤔
