Here's a map of the Ottoman Empire in 1683. It contained large parts of Europe at the time. Its northern border was close to Vienna.
North Africa (the Maghreb), Arabia, Central Europe - parts of the Ottoman Empire. Many contemporary states have been set up by the winners of WWI out of the bankrutcy assets of that empire, such as Syria and Iraq.
