Is the U.S. headed for another civil war?

MistyCee Best Comment
Not a conventional war, IMO, but we do seem headed towards conflicts that our constitution is ill equipped to handle.

Kavanaugh's confirmation is a pretty clear example of this. There is no appeal from a Supreme Court justices failure to recuse himself, and yet, based on Kavanaugh's statement before his confirmation, it's hard to see how any lawyer representing a party in any way affiliated with any of Trump's "enemies" could ethically not raise the question of Kavanaugh's impartiality.

Too bad, I'm sure Trump allies will say, echoing Obama's "elections have consequences" line, but this is a pretty significant change in our system of government, when those opposed to the executive have no resort to an independent judiciary.

Of course, there's still the "deep state," lower court judges who might resist unlawful conduct, and elections might give us a Congress who might stand up to one man rule, but even die hard Republicans should think about what's happening at this point.

It's definitely a crisis point.

@MistyCee I think Roe is safe, some Republicans went for assurances before backing him. The time was close to up...they were losing their window.
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-gops-least-worst-option-is-if-kavanaugh-withdraws-and-soon/
@okaybut Roe is likely to continue to die a slow death, and it makes a nice talking point for both sides, but the abortion issue is really just part of the landscape, like a hill that gets taken and retaken by other sides.

This is a fight about power, and federalism is a part of it as well, by the left with desegregation and things like Roe, and now by the right with the Second Amendment, but the battle hasnt bloodied the Court since FDR, and we've never had a man like Trump in office before.

He doesn't give a crap about abortion. He was pro choice once, and he doesn't give a hoot about conservative values or even the country in the long term. Charitably, he's a pragmatist, who's only interest is winning, but by that, he means winning for himself, at all costs, and with zero regard for anyone but himself.

As far as the GOP goes, any candidate Trump puts up in the next three years is likely to continue to kill Roe with small cuts, but Kavanaugh is kind of unique because he's likely to protect Trump while any other conservative judge might take a less favorable view towards protecting a sitting president from judicial process and the use of the pardon power for state crimes.

This move is pure Trump. He got a judge he thinks is personally loyal to him on the Court, and one who he expects will help him down the road.

Honestly, until that last hearing, I was resigned to a pro life leaning judge, but that last hearing showed me we're getting something else entirely.

Kavanaugh himself might not act out the worst non-judicial influences and contempt for the Senate he showed at the hearings when he's on the bench, but the fact that he could show then, and that 50 Senators don't mind it, as long as he's one of them and not one of us, is horrific.

@pagandad And I'm telling you, old man, that it doesn't matter. Our numbers and bullets trump yours. By the way, must've sucked fighting a war for no reason. Tell us more about it. Also, if you think being a vet entitles you to my respect, remember I think you're a piece of shit despite your service. Backing a russian agent over your own people is treason.

@Sarin pfft ... you haven’t the discipline to be anything but a mouthy wimp
luv2fly352 · 70-79, M
I don't mean this as criticism but i'd be remiss for not pointing out that most Americans are woefully uninformed, lacking even a basic understanding of their Constitutional rights concerning the 1st,2nd,and 4th amendments let alone being aware of The Real I.D. Act,The D.O.D.'s 1033 program already militarizing police forces in this country or the police "Stingray" and "Facial recognition" technology being instituted at airports now and if you want more cheery news then read about The U.N.'s 2030 Agenda.

Sadly yes and it will truly be brother against brother this time
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Mountainlady16 Yeah I can see that. I have a sister who is siding with all the lefties and spewing her stuff on Facebook...can't go around her.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@cherokeepatti most my family is conservative but we have a few leftist mostly on my dads side

I don't see it happening. We're clearly at a societal low point, and there will continue to be short bursts of situational civil unrest in pockets. As bad as the fractures seem today, 1968 was much worse, and a full blown civil war never manifested. Things will continue to be ugly, but I just don't see a full fledged civil war breaking out.
Sourdad · 56-60, M
@SW-User This is why it's worse.
SW-User
@Sourdad I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm just saying a lot more flashpoints have to accumulate before we're even close to 1968. However, the current leadership is much worse than the Johnson administration was in 1968. Maliciousness trumps ineptitude as far as that goes. I think we're close to agreeing, but I just need to see more before I'm there.
Northwest · M
@SW-User
I think the wildcard that didn't exist in 1968 is the fact that we have a sitting president who might be ok with violence as long as the right people were getting hurt.
I agree with you on how Mushroom Head feels, but his followers consist of a couple primary groups:

1. The Corporate Heads / Wealthy, who want to maximize their wealth. They are not going to take part in any war.

2. The hillbillies, who think they have guns, and as such, they will kick liberals' butts. These idiots will not be going up against liberals, but against law enforcement, and we know how that usually works.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
BTW dimwit a president has only won 5 times by electoral vote only 1824, 1876, 1888 2000 and 2016. So do you want to resend your comment on how republican president hasn't won the popular vote in 35 years especially since the first presidential election in that time span was won by a landslide Reagan only losing 1 state and DC
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@Sarin how do they buy beer orciggarettes or attend an r rated movie then. How do they drive a car or get a job. Or he'll get their fs and wic all requite id
Sarin · 26-30, M
@Mountainlady16 Sure, those require IDs and they should but to tell everyone that they need to have an ID wherever they go is a glaring overreach and fucked up.
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@Sarin it's to make sure no criminal is just walking around
redredred · M
one side has most of the guns and military experience and the other side is confused about which bathroom to use. Some fight.

@Sarin I mean dude do you even own a gun we're pacifist but we own 4
Sarin · 26-30, M
@Mountainlady16 I own guns. More than 3 actually. My whole family does and believe me I'm no pacifist.
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
@Mountainlady16 Trump actually won states that hadn't voted Republican in 30 years trump's win in Wisconsin was 1st gop win since 1984 Michigan and Pennsylvania went gop for the first time since 1988 these states usually are democratic
Sarin · 26-30, M
Like I've said before. It goes up and down, it happens. It doesn't necessarily mean anything.
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
@Mountainlady16 a lot of women are running this year
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@tiggerandariel13 they are there was a woman running for the TN governorship she lost the primary

I thought about it but seems like its not gonna happen anytime soon. The only thing we will see is mass arrest against lots of political criminals. temporary martial law

I hope it doesn’t get violent, but like slavery, the two sides are irreconcilable. I would never enter a political compact to have a nation with the Trumparians.
5thApprentice · 31-35, M
From the outside looking in, maybe? Things seem so polarized over there, it spills into everything else like SW.
I never understood why people got their nut fantasizing about and wishing for civil war. I have known people from West Africa, the Mideast, the Balkans. People who saw civil war in their lifetimes. People who actually like this prospect are either sociopaths or ignorant of history. Or trolls of the highest order.

//not putting that on the OP. Just seems to be a thing these days. WOOT. Civil war! WOOT//

Probably not in the military sense, but there will be extreme unrest as time goes on.
I think Americans will stand by and watch no matter what happens, the army/navy/airforce will happily become Nazi's if their Chief wants them to. It doesn't matter how many die, go broke, nothing is ever bad enough to kill the neighbors for.
@St0ut So how do you explain the taking of children from their parents and never giving them back?
St0ut · 51-55, M
Exactly. Right That practice was stopped by the courts. Via separation of powers.
The courts made rules sure, but they still have hundreds of kids with no parents. They may never see their parents again.
Only if they can hold it over facebook.
okaybut · 56-60, M
Democrats can appeal to about 49% of the popular vote in the next election and they will need to resort to force. That means they will have to let go of some their radical left.
@okaybut We held the popular vote last time, before Trump basically embarrassed our country with scandal after scandal. The Republicans would want to get rid of their racist right connections. Difficult with the POTUS leading them.
okaybut · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard But not enough to overtake the smaller states and the Electoral College (48.2% to about 49% should do it). I am not sure the Republicans can shed their racist right. And that means the Democrats could very easily win the next election if they just move to a more moderate ideology and connect with the working poor (ie. the swing states that Trump very masterfully took last election).

No, because if California, NY, and other blue states secede, we will let them go.

Sarin · 26-30, M
@Mountainlady16 Actual confederates said that before. Didn't learn a single lesson from that did ya?
@Mountainlady16 what does "the south will rise again" mean to you?
Mountainlady16 · 22-25, F
@Sarin you obviously didn't take us government in school. Let me guess you were public school educated I ran into quite a few of those especially since starting university usually no independent thought just trained to pass tests
okaybut · 56-60, M
No...one of the virtues of a democracy.
okaybut · 56-60, M
@Sarin How so?
@okaybut Arguably, it was a democracy when it happened the last time.

Exactly Sarin, the truth hurts. You need to grow up.
Sarin · 26-30, M
When you say truth, do you mean the objective, factual truth or your made up bullshit?

I would never have thought so. But now, I just don’t know. In a very real sense a lot of us will be fighting for our lives.
