Is the U.S. headed for another civil war?

I don't see it happening. We're clearly at a societal low point, and there will continue to be short bursts of situational civil unrest in pockets. As bad as the fractures seem today, 1968 was much worse, and a full blown civil war never manifested. Things will continue to be ugly, but I just don't see a full fledged civil war breaking out.
@SW-User Was 1968 worse, considering where we’ve been since ?

I think it's worse. The potential for violence is greater.

@bijouxbroussard So far, I think it was. That year saw two major assassinations of leaders, and at least another attempted one if you count Wallace (as repugnant as he was). You had mass protests in the streets. The sitting president effectively resigned by refusing to see reelection. There was the chaos and riots in Chicago during the DNC. The Detroit riots were also part of that backdrop. With all that, the U.S. never fully descended into a civil war. 2020 has the potential to be the most tumultuous year since 1968. I just look at 1968 and believe if it didn't break that year, it can survive 2020. Perhaps that's too optimistic on my part.

@Sourdad I think the wildcard that didn't exist in 1968 is the fact that we have a sitting president who might be ok with violence as long as the right people were getting hurt. I could see that as a tipping point, but hopefully, it won't be.

@SW-User I see Russian interference as a deceleration of WAR.

@SW-User This is why it's worse.

@Sourdad I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm just saying a lot more flashpoints have to accumulate before we're even close to 1968. However, the current leadership is much worse than the Johnson administration was in 1968. Maliciousness trumps ineptitude as far as that goes. I think we're close to agreeing, but I just need to see more before I'm there.

I agree with you on how Mushroom Head feels, but his followers consist of a couple primary groups:

1. The Corporate Heads / Wealthy, who want to maximize their wealth. They are not going to take part in any war.

2. The hillbillies, who think they have guns, and as such, they will kick liberals' butts. These idiots will not be going up against liberals, but against law enforcement, and we know how that usually works.
