So I had to break someone's heart yesterday.

I have been taking care of a blind man since May. He's my most favorite and very dear to my heart. But the agency he's with (PPL) hasn't paid me a dime. They owe me a bit over $1,200 but I kept tending to him because he needs the help.
I've gone back & forth with this agency since the beginning. And this has caused me to get way behind on my bills. Yesterday was my final attempt so I told them I'll see them in court.
In the meantime, I've picked up 21 more hours with the agency I'm with for my weekend clients. (Senior Helpers of Blue Ridge).
So now that David realizes I've finally given up, he's very upset. He probably cried after I left. I cried last night. Because like I said, he's my most favorite.
I have rent to pay and I just can't do it any more. I'll end up losing my apartment.
It hurts.

This is so sad to read.

When my mother had a stroke, the revolving door of caregivers who came to the home consisted of a series of detached people who were impersonal in their manner and clearly doing the minimum amount needed.

So when I read your story, in which you really formed a connection with David, and then had to stop because of the agency not paying you, I get really angry. I hope you collect every penny.

@DrWatson It breaks my heart how these people are treated. I said earlier that if I had the funds & wasn't taking care of things by myself, I would absolutely volunteer with him. But that just isn't an option for me.

It’s so hard letting go but you don’t have a choice. I worked in care and most of the agencies were as bad as the others. I hadn’t had a day off for 18 days so I told them I was taking what should’ve been my day off every week. They called me 15 times! After working Christmas Day morning and running late they tried to add extra calls on me. I’m a single mum and told them I had to get home to cook dinner. They told me I should just get a Chinese!! Even though they charged clients 3x more per hour that day we only got an extra £3 in wages 🤷🏼‍♀🙄They don’t care about their workforce. It was so hard to leave because of how much I cared for certain clients.

@Bleed That's just wrong. I've formed bonds with all four of my clients but David is my absolute favorite & I'm heart broken that I had to let him go.
This is upsetting to read on two levels. The first being the agency is running afoul of the law and should be held accountable. The second being that guy is losing his angel, though as you said you're losing your favorite.
Please keep in mind it's not selfish for you to look out for yourself. If you don't you can't take care of anyone.
You went above and beyond already. The agency took advantage of your empathy and kind nature.
And now because of them, two people are in a sad situation, making difficult decisions that shouldn’t be theirs to make.
You did well

You can't help others if you don't take care of yourself. That isn't being selfish, it is recognizing reality.
Tumbleweed · F
@bowman81 Thank you 🥺
That's messed up. I'm sorry for you and the blind man. 😞
Tumbleweed · F
@MsSwan Thank you. I truly hated to leave him but if I weren't doing things on my own, I'd gladly volunteer for him but I just can't work for free.
@Tumbleweed I understand.

That agency doesn`t care about the patient or the caregiver. It`s all about the bottom line, money. I wonder how many others they haven`t paid?
Tumbleweed · F
@Degbeme There have been several. I read their reviews when I filed a complaint with the better business bureau, one person even said they oughta be shut down.
@Degbeme You are correct, sir

Bless your heart and Davids. I hope you get reimbursed as well.
Tumbleweed · F
@WillaKissing He wouldn't give me more hours because he knew I wasn't getting paid & said when they start paying me, he'll give me more but he didn't like me working for free. But it doesn't matter now because I've committed to more hours with the other agency.

Report the agency for non-payment of wages to your state’s employment commission. Have all your data ready make your case. They usually act quickly.

Also report them to the state agency that controls their license.
Tumbleweed · F
@TexChik Definitely. This has gone beyond ridiculous.
I’m so sorry… that’s just crazy 🫂

Move on girl, move on
Adrift · 61-69, F
Did you file a complaint with the labor commission in your state?
Tumbleweed · F
@Adrift Doing that tomorrow!
Adrift · 61-69, F
@Tumbleweed Good.
Hopefully With that you won't have to wait to go through the court system.
I know of a business that was reported for cutting hours on people's pay and they did a full audit and had to pay it all back.
Tumbleweed · F
@Adrift I was going to take them to small claims court but then I had two people tell me yesterday to report them to the employment commission so when I get off work today, I'm going to the VEC office.
