There comes a time when a decision needs to be made, take the abuse or stand up for ourselves.
I had a similar situation at work.
The new General Manager changed the rules stating that when someone makes another mistake then they will be issued with a written warning.
I called him out, saying - "Have you changed company policy? Did you tell the supervisor to tell the workers that the next mistake will mean a written warning? The rule is that when a mistake is made tell the boss and things will be rectified. You will not have your head bitten off, just tell us and all will be put right.
He back tracked and said it was a "miscommunication"
I asked him three times and got the same response - "miscommunication"
That is what management and middle management say when they are caught out in a lie.

@Gusman it's a weird dynamic for sure. Inescapable

@MarbleMarvel I have spoken to HR about it and let them know I am applying for other jobs.
If I am offered one I will leave.
Though being 63 I will most likely not be successful.
Through with putting up with lying, bullying Management.

@Gusman I wish you luck, it is not easy finding jobs unless you want less.
It's almost like they promote the most awful people into upper level positions. With the exception of one job I had with a great small business, most places don't tolerate anything but perfection.

Taking abuse isn't any job. Glad you stood up.
I recently had a co-worker who was constantly challenging me. Doing things to make my job harder. Then he got in my face screaming at me when he didn't get a raise and I did, becauae obviously was my fault. He was escorted out.

@Bexsy Yes! Win for kind people every where! Did you get to say anything to him?
What scares me is how angry are these people and are they going to wait for me after work 😂

@MarbleMarvel i didn't say anything honestly, wish i had. I was in shock.
Can you park closer to the doors? Maybe walk with someone?

Weirdly something very similar happened to me today but not as extreme but I was blamed for something I didn't do by the person who authorized it in a meeting full of people. I let it go to stay professional in front of that quorum but man I'm still angry and brought that home with me and it's so irritating that I let it affect me. I'm proud of you for sticking up for yourself. You don't need to take abuse. I plan on confronting this person next week but I needed to calm down first because I've known them for 10 years and it threw me off.
@Turtlepower I'm sorry you went through that bs today too. I wish for you that you could of told him straight away. Because you're the one carrying it around. There's ways to let people know, but it's hard to keep emotions out of it when you're getting drug through the mud for something you didn't do.

@MarbleMarvel yeah it's very political right now but whatever. I hope you're doing ok

I doubt you will get fired. What may happen is they will put you on a "final warning". They always say "final warning".
Customers act like that for the specific goal of getting discounts.
The best thing to do, as soon as you can tell a situation is going to escalate, is to tell them, "Let me call my manager for you".
Let the boss deal with their BS.
Retail and low-end jobs are a dime a dozen. I am sure you could easily find something.
Plus if you do get let go, it will probably be a relief.
Just at future job interviews, Do not go into details about why you were let go. If they ask why you left, just say, "I had been there a while and decided to seek other opportunities" or something neutral to that effect.
Or just poke around google to find out good things to say.
IF perspective employers call your old job, the old place cannot legally go into details about your departure, all they can do is verify the dates you started and finished your employment.
Well put it this way - I worked with a guy who was fired for stealing. At his next job during the interview, he told them that his old place had eliminated his position. 😄 Must have worked cause he got the job.

I used to work in a supermarket and got plenty of rude customers. I am glad my Country is way more tolerant in allowing you to talk back to them.

@MarbleMarvel They should prioritise the staff.

yeah, nobody deserves to be called names, especially at work. we are all just trying to make a living. i was being treated like i was an idiot from a new buyer from one of our customers on the phone. they weren't a very big customer of ours so i knew i could have some push back especially since i bought way more from them than they bought from us. but he didn't realize that. i kinda gave him attitude back (but no name calling)
but i knew all along i was holding the cards... towards the end of him trying to belittle me i asked him if they sold such and such items. i asked him to go in their system and look at our sales history...there was a pause...his jaw must have dropped...i was actually this close 🤏to telling him to eff off and a bunch of other stuff....and there wasn't a thing he could have done about it

@PepsiColaP thank you 🖤
That really pisses me off. I'm glad you stood up for yourself. No job is worth your self respect.
@MsSwan it's not. Getting fired from a job isn't exactly great looking though, that's my fear. I won self respect points today so I guess we'll call it a win and 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼I don't get canned 😂
@MarbleMarvel 🤞🤞🤞

Serving the customer is one thing but your dignity isn’t for sale. Glad you stuck up for yourself!

there are jobs for good workers
I hope he realizes that he needs you

@Pretzel the issue is corporate. My coworkers know I bust ass and I'm generally really friendly and playful with people. But if he calls me in, they're gonna want me out. It's all about how it looks.

@cherokeepatti absolutely, lol I've hated this place for awhile but all retail is the same. Most jobs even, you're just expected to take it and make the customer happy so they keep coming back. My manager didn't stick up for me at all, not even in a fair honest way. I'm just disgusted.

@MethDozer that mentality doesn't exist here unfortunately.

it doesnt matter if it's a paying customer, no one should be allowed to abuse the employees what the heck
@MartinTheFirst that's how every retail job I've had is. Not constantly, but daily abuse 😂

@CountScrofula I was told that is my job. If someone is going wild, give them a discount. It's so backwards but it's like that every retail job I've had.
