Hmmmm, I am working with a hiring manager and was suggested to reject an applicant because they are too senior

I'm in two minds about this. This person has clearly worked in higher positions and this would be a step down, but that's their choice. They bring the skills, maybe pretty soon they'll want a different position but we still benefit from that.

My Dad had to retire for health reasons,especially long travel reasons...he kept getting the overqualified ,will leave line

He wouldn't have and I think not working shortened his life by many years...he just needed a close by job he could do well
Could be missing out on a very bright and dependable worker.

If he has the skills you need to hire them. Just because they are older is no reason not to. Sounds like your hiring manager is inexperienced and should be replaced.

@Tastyfrzz I think he means job experience not senior as in age.

He’s concerned the guy’s going a couple of minutes on the age and a “where do you want to be in 5 years” conversation may be warranted

It's still age discrimination. If you point that out your hiring manager, would there repercussions for you?
@calicuz the manager comes out and makes him play the drums
That makes little sense. They are willing to step down, they have the skills, they should be considered for the role.
@OrionInTheNight which part?
@nonsensiclesnail just the whole age discrimination thing makes me feel depressed for the entire human race
@OrionInTheNight absolutely, but it’s been a thing for a long time. And maybe it’s not an age thing but a position thing.
Sounds discriminatory on his part tbh
