Would you quit a job if they didn’t give you lunch breaks

I basically have to eat at my desk, while constantly intrupeted by things happening. Or I’m given about ten or fifteen to myself if we are properly staffed.
I work 12 hour shifts, and the law says I’m entitled to at least an hour.

I worked at a convenience store that didn't allow breaks. I only lasted about 4 months, it sucked.
Rickg · 31-35, M
Pretty sure they can’t do that
Glad you moved on
Life’s too short to do jobs you hate @DearAmbellina2113

No way I am going to work with no one hour break. The place I worked last time i have one hour break after working four hours, nobody is going to disturb our rest time even when we lack of staff. The person who has earlier break has to help out a little but we usually prepare our stuff before the break.
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@Teachocolate the only one hour lunch breaks I've ever gotten was when I worked at walmart, of all places.
rosyhills · 31-35, F
Completely understand this. My building does not have a break room so I am forced to eat at my desk, and be interrupted by coworkers, people coming in and out, even the manager asking me to do stuff. No one cares that you're trying to "unplug" take a break, and eat. It is very frustrating!. My only other option is to goto my car, which is a 5 minute walk away. They only give us 20 minutes to eat, but I work 8 hrs.

*Edit- I just realized I just responded to a 3 yr old post🤦. One that I've already responded on,3 yrs ago..it popped up tho🤷‍♀️
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@Coralmist yea, apparently people have been abusing. They are giving us 20 mins. We can take breaks thru the day but we don't have a break room so what good is it? People still interrupt you and ask questions etc because you're at your desk
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@rosyhills Maybe walk to your car at lunch
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@Coralmist my car is 5 mins away and the area is sketchy
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
My job is an 8 hr shift with only two 20 minute breaks. I'm not happy with it but I'm just sticking around til I have enough $$$ to move away.
I work from home mostly but when I'm at the office even though technically I get an hour lunch I mostly just eat at my desk anyway.. sometimes I'll start working sooner just to make the time pass by faster. They'd never take away our lunch break but if they did I probably still wouldn't quit. I can eat while doing my job and nobody bothers me.

I think for a 12 hour shift they're actually obliged to give you a 60 minute and a 30 minute break.

And yeah, if they pulled that on me regularly, I'd start looking for a new job, and quit when I found one.
Rickg · 31-35, M
I’m thinking along those lines too. @firefall
rosyhills · 31-35, F
Wow. If it's the law, call their corporate office.
chrisCA · M
@Rickg Remember that HR is on the company's side.
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@Rickg i dont think so. Goto corporate. Sometimes they dont know how badly their employees are being treated
Rickg · 31-35, M
I figure I might see if there willing to be reasonable. @chrisCA
Teachocolate · 51-55, F
Yes,I will surely quit lol.I work from 12noon to 8pm.I have one hour break from 3-4pm.If 5pm to 10pm then of course no break.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
No they are breaking the LAW Rick...you need an hour and two 15 min in a 12 hour shift...walk out on ur break next time...say I’m taking my lunch now..I had to on a job😟
Rickg · 31-35, M
Yea. I’ll consider how far I want to fight this, and if it’s worth it. @Coralmist
nowic2 · 61-69, M
@Coralmist hey, well done on being assertive & speaking up for yourself. Hope you were proud of you! 🤗
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@nowic2 Well it was on behalf of another, which I can moreso do than for me. But even speaking up at all makes me anxious...so looking back at my reply, I'm proud too...you are so kind Now☘️🤗🌸

If you are working 12 hours you should get 2 meal breaks. You should not be going longer than 5 hours (assuming you are in the US. Idk about elsewhere)
Rickg · 31-35, M
Just one hour where i live. Dosent specify on how I should take it. @melmouthfulls
rosyhills · 31-35, F
@melmouthfulls I've worked 12 hours shifts and we only got the standard 30 min lunch and 2 15s
Rickg · 31-35, M
Depends on the labour laws in you’re state, country, and if you’re employer actually decides to follow them I guess , @rosyhills
sighmeupforthat · 46-50, M
No.....

I'd have to think upon it.

I work through my lunch. . But, it is still my lunch hour.

I remember daze...... yeh, no lunch breaks. .. pay was.... otay.

still better, so far- knock on wood - than most freelance or 'for hire' work .

Sòoo far.
Rickg · 31-35, M
Yea. I’d still like the choice of talking it off. @sighmeupforthat
Have you talked to your boss about this?

Go higher, talk to hr.

Have you been there longer than your probationary period?
Rickg · 31-35, M
Yea I brought it up after he said that my taking breaks was “a bad habit he was gonna break”. So you can imagine how positive his response was. I haven’t talked to HR, but I’m considering it. @StayGold
@Rickg omfg...I would start searching for a job, if you find a lot of promising ones, call hr and explain to them what he's said, and quit if you want to, or stay to see if it's resolved. I can't believe him. 😑 What kind of work do you do if you don't mind me asking?
Rickg · 31-35, M
Security
You should see a big sign on a wall somewhere. It will have the number of your state obudsman. You need to talk to them privately and yell them what is going on.
Rickg · 31-35, M
I’m in Canada, so there are some small differences. I think I’d have to contact the ministry of labour. Also they don’t have the Employment Standards Act (the relevant laws) posted in my office, as they should [@Mondayschild
hlpflwthat · M
Find something else before you quit. You probably figured that. But working like a dog usually winds up with getting treated like a dog. Good luck!
Rickg · 31-35, M
Agreed. @hlpflwthat

I often don't get lunch or work through my lunch. Legally we are supposed to take a lunch but it's expected that we won't when we are busy.
Rickg · 31-35, M
They hate me taking a break regardless if its busy or not. @SW-User
Butterflykisses24 · 51-55, F
Yeah true but it isn't paid time.I'd rather work through and get paid.
Rickg · 31-35, M
They choose to pay for the breaks. But I’m still supposed to get them off. I’d take them unpaid if that’s what the company wanted. @Butterflykisses24
Butterflykisses24 · 51-55, F
@Rickg companies usually don't pay for break time.
Chaoshead · 22-25, M
Depends on the pay. 🤷
Rickg · 31-35, M
It’s okay. Living wage, but that’s about it. @Chaoshead
Chaoshead · 22-25, M
@Rickg If you're capable of doing better then go for it. I would look for another place to work before quitting though.
Legally, if I'm working a certain amount of time, they'd have to. I might not quit, but I'd certainly contact OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a government agency) In a non-union shop that might get me fired, which would be actionable.
Rickg · 31-35, M
I just might do that, I’m considering taking the issue up with the authorities, and seeking the advice of a lawyer if the situation continues.

I’m in a tight spot, as I’ve already bounced from job to job over the past years, and it’s gonna look bad if a throw in the towel on this one. I could really use a positive reference from them at least, which is the main thing holding me back. . @bijouxbroussard
