Apparently the guy in my department who got fired the other day had a bout of depression 🙁

I guess that explains why he missed the two days he did without calling in and wasn't answering our attempts to contact him. He was in this past Monday and I noticed that he was very weirdly quiet when he's usually more upbeat and talkative. Like I said in an earlier post, it was all very out of character of him. Another guy who's friends with him outside of work was telling us he recently had a bad breakup with his girlfriend, who's also the mother of his kid, and that combined with the stress of the increased workload we've been getting in our department just got to him that bad. That really is a shame and I know what it's like having a depression slump all too well. I just wish he handled it differently and at the very least let us know he was going to be out those days so he could've put in for PTO. But as per our company policy, you no-show two days without a word, it's considered job abandonment, so it's out of our hands. He can apply for unemployment, so there's that, and just, all the best to him. Hopefully we can see him back in another department in our workplace someday.

Where I worked there was a duty of care policy.
If someone had a bout of depression then the obligation was there for the employer to arrange paid therapy for the worker, for 6 sessions.
The worker was kept on full pay.

I once had a warehouse director who went MIA for 3 days. Turns out he had 'fallen off the wagon' and was in hospital recovering from severe alcohol poisoning. Scared the hell out of me but I was glad he was ok. Management wanted to cut him loose. Since I was owner, I left the door open for him. He stayed with us and hasn't relapsed in 3 years. When I sold the business this year I set him up with a couple places to work and he's in a good place. I hope for the best for him.
