My Holiday Office Party is Tonight

and I do not feel like seeing my coworkers out in this setting. We have rented the catering hall to a very popular bar/night club. Our party is fully catered, and drinks are for free up until 10:30.

Meanwhile, I still need to get home and finish my fall clean up. It's mostly done, but the last bit still needs a little tweaking. Plus, I would need to take a nap if I were to go out...late (for me). On top of that all...it's thirty miles out from where I live.
HR called me out yesterday on my lack of social attendance for company gatherings. I am a very popular personality at work...little do they know how much I lack the desire to be social with them there.

I am so not feeling it tonight....
I like to go to those for the only reason of seeing who's going to ruin their career by getting drunk and saying things they shouldn't 😄

I love not going to things.

I have never attended office parties since 2007.

First of all, I don't drink and I really hate bragging and gossip / loose talk.

Lastly I am an introvert.

Only exception was a party organised for a few people who had their 10 year work anniversary.

I do my best to avoid such gatherings

Thankfully, I'm not popular at work

@SW-User hi cherny, how have you been?
FYI, I never made it into my company party. I took a nap (it's the only way possible for me to go out at night...my mid day naps)...and I woke at a quarter to nine. No way was I going to get ready then...and drive out thirty miles.

@Ferric67 stressed but ok ...

Naps are better than parties any day ..
How have you been ?

You have the right to your boundaries. As long as you're doing your job, they don't have the right to place unfair demands elsewhere in your life.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
30 miles away? I wouldn’t go
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
Well, were I use to work the CEO told me I'm not allowed to socialize with other coworkers after hours, which is illegal for her to say that, but I'm required to go to company picnics and holiday parties...........
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The HR department actually checks up on your attendance?

Their job should be to understand why an individual might choose not to attend a social event in their own time.

Well, unless you live in China, where you actually have to earn social credit points to use the internet, then I would tell HR to eff off.
had ours last night. cocktails, dinner, dancing and gave out year end bonuses to his staff. a very enjoyable evening
I hate work events.
It's hard enough seeing these people in the office . I don't need to spend more time with them
Fluffybull · F
I don't think ones job should be dependent on attending staff parties.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
HR shouldn’t be dictating what you do with your personal time, or pressuring you
ArtieKat · M
You should have asked if you're being paid attendance time and travelling expenses.
scorpiolovedeep · 46-50, M
I would like to add something related to workplace laws.

These days you could be fired for various reasons , the number of policies they add on every few years is increasing.

In my example I could be fired & fined for the following breaches

1. Safety
2. Environmental
3. IT related
4. Bullying and Harassment
5. Alcohol and Drugs
6. Workplace Relations

Unless it's a mandatory function, skip it.
Really ?

And how popular is HR?

Maybe THEY need to go and start a macarena or something 🤔

Your personal time, your call ....not theirs .

Go dredge the lawn.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
I went to mine yesterday
It was fine
I’m not a party person and don’t drink so fine is the best I could really ask for personally
I hope you have fun
Ikrrrr i have a dinner tonite with my best friend i never see and its like ugh i dont want to socialize
DownTheStreet · 51-55, M
Sounds like a typical HR department
Just go for an hour then sneak out
Ferric67 · M
@EarthlingWise short answer, no

I took a nap and when I awoke it was a quarter to nine. Given that I needed to get ready and then drive 30 miles...I chose to be a recluse 🤷‍♂️
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Don’t go.
