What am I working for?

That's a typical question a lot of young people ask. "What am I working for?" Well the best thing I could tell you this what you're working for is money what that money buys is your future retirement your house your boat your car your wife's ring your children's education your children's toys your toys your wife's toys and I'm not talking about the sex toys!

You're working for your life insurance for your wife's life insurance, no you don't get to eliminate her! Your children's insurance things happen to little kids sadly enough and that is what you're working for.

As it said even though to live for today you should always plan for tomorrow and the future. Or that which is below. It's good stuff.

The problem is that you need to convince people who are currently working 2/3 jobs and with that they can barely get to the end of the month with a net zero balance between income and expenses, while living the most frugal life possible.

So the question remains. If retirement, cars, boats, marriages, let alone kids are off the table, what are we even working for?
Disgustedman · 61-69, M
@Elessar yes it is the choice of the worker. They made a choice to accept work that wasn't legal they made that choice in their heart.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Disgustedman The alternative is starving or being evicted, is it really a choice?
Disgustedman · 61-69, M
@Elessar oh so people have to work illegally to afford an apartment or to buy food? Spare me there's more than enough charity food being handed out daily to feed thousands of people, So don't start with "oh they're going to starve or they're going to be evicted!" that's poppycock grabbing at straws you just don't want to admit it that they have a choice do it right or don't.

I enjoy my work because I turned one of my hobbies into a career. I make a lot, enough to reasonably support a family of 6 (soon to be 7) on my income alone.

That said, we will never be able to retire or afford anything luxurious that isn't paid for by the company. That part is hard to deal with.

I consider myself luckier than most my age because at least we aren't working 40+ hours a week just to starve.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I'm not sure about the retirement part. The way things are, there doesn't seem to be any guarantee that young people will ever see their retirement money once they get old.

I'd say "you work for experience." Whatever that might be.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@CrazyMusicLover Yea, and if it comes to be that you can't afford to retire, working instead of retiring won't be so bad.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Heartlander Ah yeah, work until 90, "it won't be so bad" 🤦‍♂️

Let's start revoking retirement wages to boomers and calling y'all back to the workforce, with our wages and contract, you'll see how quickly you'll change your mind about the issue. ;)
Punches · 46-50, F
All that ain't going to happen on most paychecks. A lot of people are lucky just to be able to support themselves, let alone cars and boats and fancy houses and vacations and cats and dogs and spouses and children and life insurance and whatever
Disgustedman · 61-69, M
@Punches that's why you should learn a trade Machinist electrician I wouldn't do concrete that is just brutal work. Carpentry framer maybe but definitely not like a rug installer.

So if I have money then I have no incentive to work?
Don't forget a place to live and food to eat.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
To make it all go down smoother, find work that you find challenging, enjoyable and fun, and with people you would otherwise be friends with and it's not really like work :)

I guess thats up to each individual to decide. In my case it was "to make a difference" and in my own small way I think I did.😷

{@disgustedman] 🤔 i am sad too say why are they asking this question . having a tunnel vision and the lack of moral responsibilty has to end. you have too make serious commitments and make your mark in the world
To pull our own weight in society.
