Fuel Cost In The UK

Fuel cost has risen to an all time high in the uk . It is now almost 10 pound a gallon . That means to fill the average tank is now just over 100 pounds . This is asbsolutely ridiculous . The cost of living is rising beyond anything we have ever seen before and this is just gonna make it worse . Transport companies wont be able to absorb the costs so once again customers are gonna pay more for their goods . Its a vicious circle and to add to it now rail staff are going on strike for more pay . If they get more pay its gonna be rail travellers it will hit with higher rail fares . So whether you use a car or use the train you cant win adding again to the cost of everything . Its begining to spiral out of control . This is gonna cause an economic slump as people stop spending and start watching their spending . Its gonna cause real problems worldwide .

You'd almost think it would motivate a fast and hard move away from petroleum products. It's hitting us in the wallet and it's definitely hitting us with the climate. But that's not how humans roll.

@braveheart21 Same with towing anything really; such as trailering vintage vehicles to rallies or sports ones to their events.

I expect the motor-caravan converters are preparing for battery or hybrid versions but so far there are few if any effective electric base vehicles (commercial vans) available.

Like you and Rhodes, there is no possible way I could ever own an electric car, whatever their rich enthusiasts tell us about prices coming down. Aye, from eye-watering to merely unaffordable. Not all we near-septagenarians are rolling in money! (I've just received my new driving-licence...)

@Ynotisay I don't know what "dude" means, but we can't just move "fast and hard".

Yes, many people hope we can move rapidly away from using petroleum-derivative fuels, but with the best will in the world it will take more than just the next few years, and certainly won't help us all out of the present mess.

Really it's something that should have been thought about a long time ago....

@Ynotisay I wonder how many people are driving less, and when they are driving, what are their driving habits? It would be hard to offset the cost increases if you were modest with your tendencies before (as I was mostly). Normally, I would drive between 95-100 km/h in an 80 zone (flow of traffic, mostly). Since prices have gone up exponentially, I set my cruise control at 90 km/h now. Typically, I'd average in my 2013 Civic about 7L per 100 km, but this has dropped its use to about 6.5L per 100 km. I know that is not significant, but as you can tell, I didn't have much of a lead foot before, either. I still see many driving fast, pushing the accelerator hard right from the start, and yet everybody is talking cost of gas.

The CDN conversion from the op posted would be $2.86 per litre in $CAD. We are paying about $2.10/litre. Yes, all prices are going up on everything, which is to be expected, and I fear for the people who barely make it by as it was.

A friend said he refilled a can for his motor-mower today, and that alone came to over ten quid! He topped up his car as well, but didn't say what that cost.

Prices for petrol round my part of the world, today, generally 186 to 190 pennies a litre (rounding up from that sneaky "£xx.9p" trick).
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@braveheart21 Well, yes! The government did tell them to cut the retail price when the wholesale cost fell, but did they 'eck!
braveheart21 · 61-69, M
Getting all the tax of the fuel 😡😡😡😡😡@ArishMell
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@braveheart21 Yes - by percentage. {Retail + Duty} X 1.2 for the VAT.

It wouldn't be so bad if the profit-margin for the retailers was better; but it is so low that many have given up selling fuel now, or closed completely; and that's been happening for a long time.

Rail fares were already higher in the UK than for equivalent journeys in Europe. For instance Swindon to Paddington today is 30 GBP, while a similar journey in Norway, Holmestrand to Oslo airport is 338 NOK = 28.26 GBP. And don't forget that Norwegian average income is higher.

Petrol prices on the other hand are about 25% higher in Norway.
WildWings · 70-79, M
I worked it out roughly today. It's about 33p mile.
Gusman · 61-69, M
That is so much higher than here in Australia.
Your price, converted to Australian dollars is $3.69 a litre, our price is $2.25 a litre.
So many businesses are gouging and blaming the war, supply chain issues and what ever else they like.
We are living in a wicked world.

The government needs to tax the energy companies more, they are making vast profits.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Kowabunga They are but whether it would raise a really useful amount of money over a useful time, in the grand scheme of things, is another matter.

The companies have been accused of not passing on price cuts to customers, and if so that is wrong.

As it is, the Treasury is raking in a lot more tax from the fuel sales than it did, though that can be self-defeating as people cut back on their motoring in response. On the other hand some would say we want that anyway, certainly to cut back on needless short journeys where sensible alternatives exist.

Went past a Tesco Superstore yesterday and diesel is £1.87 a litre ffs
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
