Why buy an electric vehicle if you cannot fully 'fill up the fuel tank' ie. charge the battery to 100 percent?

Seems pretty dumb. Most people with a petrol or diesel vehicle don't stop filling up before the fuel nozzle auto-shutoff operates, meaning it's 100 percent full. Or go slow after the 80 pct full point, or fill slowly the whole way from mt to full.

What's the point of having an EV if you can only charge to 80 percent? Most people won't know how to stop a fast charge at 80 pct and go slow the rest but maybe charging stations are smart about this now.

Most manufacturers discourage so-called 'fast charging' to more than 80 percent, which highlights a key design fault in the concept of Lithium-based energy storage for transport vehicles of any sort.

Imagine an electric replacement for a Boeing 747 cargo freighter or 777, or a 737 regular aircraft, and being told you cannot recharge to more than 80 before the next leg of a long-haul flight... Or an EV box ship with the same restriction. 8-)

Everything can charge to 100%, especially lithium. The nickel batteries still charge to 100%, but they are subject to degradation over a long span of time. Charging to 80-90% for daily use simply increases the battery life.

You can charge to 100%. But a "fast charge" is 80%, because once at 80% the rate of charge the battery will accept is slower..Plus there is a penalty in the battery if you charge more than 80%. It degrades faster..😷

80 is the new 100.
