At what age should people give up driving?

80? 90? 100?!!!!
MorbidCynicF
When they experience mental decline. My grandfathers brother is 86 and still drives. He鈥檚 also still fully functional, does his own tasks/errands, and lives alone with his wife.

Some should never start. It very much depends on the person and there is not a one size fits all.

mmmm... I don't know. Some elderly people can drive better than a lot of the younger ones now a days. It shouldn't be based on age at all in my opinion. Driving skills vary from person to person whether they're 50 or 99 years old. Now, my grandmother on my mom's side.. she shouldn't be driving at all with her having signs of dementia and other things, but I wouldn't say one should stop driving just because they've reached a certain age.

Not sure if they have an age they start checking on people, but they should if they don't. It's probably mostly decided by family, because I bet the age varies a lot.
@SW-User I checked in my state (California)
Specifically, California:

requires drivers age 70 and older to renew their licenses in person and to take both a vision test and written test when doing so

accepts requests from family members and others for the DMV to conduct unsafe driver investigations, and

requires doctors who diagnose patients with Alzheimer's disease or other conditions that may make them unsafe drivers to report the diagnosis.
@bijouxbroussard Wow, that's really thorough! And important.

At what age should people start driving is more like it. Way too many young punks think they're joe cool behind the wheel flying and cutting in and out of traffic.

Lots of older people play golf successfully
NanoriF
I gave it up at 18
My neighbor Teddy is 104. He drove to McDonalds every day, picked up a newspaper and drove home. 2 weeks ago his old car broke down so...I think they will both stay off the road now
HannahSkyF
There's a test for that. You don't have to decide, the dmv will tell you.
FluffybullF
@HannahSky Maybe in the US, but not the UK.
HannahSkyF
@Fluffybull oh I see, didn't realize you were in the UK. I'm surprised they don't have something in place.
I know here it's usually a process for people. There really is no set age, everyone's different with their abilities.

Whenever they can't sense things well enough or react quickly enough.

Might be 16, might be 60, might be post mortem.

When they mistake the Highway for a river, it鈥檚 time to turn in your driving privilege.
smiler201256-60
{@fluffybull] i do not know how i can say this without being ageist . perhaps a capacity test to see if the older generation are still competent and road safe . if they pass they can drive until they fail the test or give up .of there own accord .
FluffybullF
@smiler2012 That seems a fair idea 馃憤
@smiler2012 In many states here they do that.
smiler201256-60
@bijouxbroussard see i am not from the states and had no idea that took place . the elderly drivers make an error of judgement as can anyone whilst driving and then are subjected to a hurl of ageist insults from other drivers

Always a year older than me

When they can't see the road or they might have an accident.
FluffybullF
@Manfredthemanic Very true. Maybe regular eye tests after a certain age?
Manfredthemanic16-17, M
@Fluffybull Yes, but I don't know what age because people lose their eyesight at different ages.
FluffybullF
@Manfredthemanic Good point! I think everyone should have an eye test every two years, anyway. I do!
FoolishLuna56-60, F
Depends where they live. In the city I say 80. Smaller communities maybe go as long as you have confidence and no accidents.
At a certain point they have to test to verify that they still can. My mother stopped driving in her late seventies. My father tested at 88 and his license was renewed. He still drives better than I ever did.
Shakealot26-30, F
Never even gotten my driver's license, but never.

It's funny you ask this, my mother in law is almost blind and she still has her driving licence.. She's getting injections in her eyeballs every 6 weeks to preserve what sight she has... And my father in law said last week that she should get out driving again 馃槩

She can't see the faces of her grandkids. BTW
