Council in Melbourne Australia now requires private land owners to get a permit to service/repair their own vehicles

https://www.casey.vic.gov.au/apply-private-land-use-permit

You'd think this is an April fools joke but it's not April.

You also have to get a permit to have an unregistered vehicle on your own private land, or have an old vehicle that you're dismantling for parts/spares, or you want to have a shipping container for any reason (like storage), and more.

If this becomes a trend and spreads like a virus around more of Australia...

Its a pollution problem with dumped oil and fluids just being dumped in the drains from a lot of back yard mechanics in the council area. There are a lot of DIY types in the migrant community working on old cars. (And more than a few off the book chop shops on properties as well). I know its heavy handed.. But it deserves a little context...😷

@zonavar68 I dont want to make this a race issue, because its not. But a lot of the local residents are recent arrivals from Africa and the middle east and used to doing it themselves as a matter of pride and independence. (I used to change my own oil, filters plugs etc) If you want to recycle the oil you need to drop it at the council recycle centre, involving a drive , a queue and sometimes a cost.. They dont make it easy. As for EV... Not so much. EV is more a top end market with Teslas here..The lower tier is just starting out.😷

@whowasthatmaskedman @zonavar68 Aside from the racial issue, it is an interesting conflict of cultures to wade through. While there are legitimate environmental/recycling issues and some aesthetic NIMBY issues, imho, being able to work on, repair, restore vehicles is a strong cultural value to large segments of the population, not limited to race, gender, or even economic status. A big question is how many are truly equipped--both in tools and skills--to do more than minimal tasks on current vehicles with their reliance on built-in computer systems, or requiring special tools? I remember losing a fan-belt on the air-conditioning, and while I could get along without the air conditioning, the broken belt had knocked off all the other fan belts when it snapped and the engine was overheating. I figured I could just re-connect the fan belts, but it required a special tool and I had to limp several miles into the nearest garage to have it done. And that was in the early 1970s.

Here in the U.S. a woman in Washington State successfully ran for a seat in Congress on the single issue of the right to BE ABLE to repair your own vehicles and appliances. Was not only elected, but re-elected. Her profession? She and her husband ran an auto-repair shop so it actually was detrimental to them economically, but a cultural issue for many.

EV vehicles are another interesting cultural conflict. Having grown up on a remote cattle ranch, I understand they are not practical for large swaths of rural geography. Living in a dense urban setting, I see where they are both an environmental necessity (depending upon how the electricity is generated) and economic advantage. But it seems to come down to a cultural war between MAGA and progressives, accentuated where I live in Silicon Valley by the fact that the Tesla has become a major status symbol of the rich, Asian tech elitists.

Can't we move past the ideological wars and accept there needs to be some pragmatic compromises? Can't we all get along, as Rodney King so aptly put it.

@dancingtongue I totally agree. The lack of support on all sides is the issue. If every service station had a used oil and part collection point, that would help..But modern vehicles are as much computer as car these days.. And both design and dealerships make it too harder for most people to do more than check fluid levels and pressures.. But tinkering under a car is still very much a "guy" past time even today..😷
