LOVED stops at Shoney's.
Yeah, it's all part of the road tripping experience.
Truck stop diners, berry stands, greasy spoons, ma and pa homecooked restaurants.
Even the large centers like the Iowa 80 stop.
Love the country gas n grocery stores, with :" NEXT GAS 100 MILES " signs after them.

@SethGreene531 Yes they do. We are from Florida. I want to see the West and the Iowa 80 Truck Stop. It is said to be the largest truck stop in the world.
We really like the KOA campgrounds. They are always so nice and clean.

@Musicman You'd enjoy stereoguy's stories, he RV's like crazy, and is in south FL.
Yeah can't wait to get back there.
A midwest cruise is beautiful--Indiana to Iowa, NB, then on to CO, Wyoming.
KOA are always so interesting. They really are an American staple, and well set up with amenities.
The west is my next goal to. Take a route through NM, into AZ-NV work from Baja to the Rainbow Canyon (camp n watch bomber runs through there) then head up the CA coast to WA and UT, MT.

@SethGreene531 I like Buc-ee's. It is a lot more than a gas station, almost a destination.

Traveling with my parents, we seldom, if ever, stopped at chain restaurants. When we were in Pennsylvania Dutch areas, we would stop at small local restaurants, and have things like Weiner Schnitzel. It was always an adventure. My father always encouraged me to try things I had never tasted before.
In the south, we would always stop at Stuckey's and get praline candy, and those wonderful pecan logs, but that was the only chain we went to consistently.

That's half the fun in going somewhere new. Trying new things 👍
@Axeroberts I know. 🙂 One thing I always enjoy when we get to a new town is checking out the different grocery stores that we don't have at home. 🙂

When my wife and I are travelling, we often stop at the hot foods sections of grocery stores.
stratosranger · M
@DrWatson That is a fantastic idea. Gotta remember that one

There is a truck stop restaurant and convenience store that I would love to stop at on a road trip. It is owned by Sikhs and the men cook the food. Have seen it featured on a show and also read about it online. Food sounds really good.
@cherokeepatti Nice! Where is it located?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Musicman It is on I-40 in Sayre, Oklahoma
@cherokeepatti I have been out RT 40 once before. If I had known about the place I would have stopped in.

Subway is a sandwich bar and NOT a restaurant 🙂🐼🥢

I do not recommend the gas station sushi

No, I always look for healthy eats.

I pretty much stopped eating at all fast food restaurants and now lean more towards Mexican restaurants. After getting food poisoning from 3 different Subways... I will never go back to a Subway. Mexican restaurants are very competitively priced compared to fast food restaurants and especially since fast food (crap food) restaurants jacked their prices out the roof . Generally family owned Mexican restaurants are hand cooked and locally aquire most of their ingredients. Taco bell, Pepe's and Hacienda don't count. They are chain food restaurants. I'm a truck driver. I generally cook 95% of my food now. I'm so done with price gouging. My truck has a stove and refrigerator. Doing this has literally saved me well over 65% of my eating expenses even still that grocery stores raised their prices too.

@Musicman no, it's usually never a problem with motorhomes as long as they're not holding up the line. What usually makes us truck drivers angry is when other truck drivers are trying to do their 30-minute dot break while fueling and then they're stuck at that island and can't move for 30 minutes. That screws other drivers who have a log book.
@IndianaJoes What slows us up is the pump won't take our credit card. I have to go inside and pre pay. That does take a few minutes. After that though I never linger at the island unless half the bays are open.

I think it's fun to try new restaurants.
Sometimes if it's just all fast food in an area, I'll stop at a local grocery store and just pick up some chopped vegetables or a couple fruits or a sandwich at their deli area or a hot food item or something

I wouldn't stop at a chain, unless it was regional. For instance I've stopped at a Waffle House in Tennessee as there's none here. If traveling like to try different things, and more localized fare if possible. Obviously, if time is a constraint, will do something tried and true.
@BrewCityBarfly Plus with our motorhome and the car hooked up being towed behind us we are 62' long. We definitely can't go through the drive through and not every parking lot can accommodate us either.

It’s been years since I took a road trip, but when my late husband and I did, we ate at places we usually didn’t, at home. One was an all you can eat buffet, and their coconut cream pie was the best I’ve ever had. I can’t recall the name of the restaurant.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
I occasionally stop at McDonald's for coffee and to use the wifi and the toilets as I am driving through northern Europe from Norway to the UK because they are more convenient and open longer than many other places.
@ninalanyon The bathroom a bottle of water or a Diet Coke is about my limit for McDonald's.
metaldog · 51-55, F
Same I wouldn't touch Subway usually but when you're road tripping you're limited for healthy food choices
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
It's a motorhome tradition then! 😊
@Queendragonfly Yes it is! We are 62' long and 12'6" tall. We are limited as to where we can go and park.
