Quick, how much should I pay my friend for this?

A friend offered to fix my toilet. He’s taking out a part in the tank, then we’re going to Lowe’s to get the replacement, and also to get a new toilet seat, and then we’re coming back and he’s replacing the part and the seat. He’s already started working on it. Shouldn’t take more that 30-40 minutes of him working on the toilet I don’t think.

What’s a good amount to pay him for it? He said that I didn’t need to pay him but I said I would. Don’t have to pay him as much as a plumber but I want to make it worth his time, also he doesn’t have a lot of money and I want to help him out a bit.
$40-$60 and a nice dinner?🤔🤷‍♂️
With cars I usually just tell them to match the price of the part, which usually ends up costing them less than going to a shop. For example, a crankshaft position sensor can run about $80, and it takes about 20-30 minutes to change, but a shop would likely charge twice that for labor and place a markup on the part. The price can vary a great deal from one vehicle to another, but you get the idea.

How close is the friend?

If he's a good close friend, I'd probably just make him dinner and get some weed, wine and/or beer.

If you've got it to spare, make it $60 - $80. You don't want to splash too much, but you also don't want it to be too little that it seems you undervalued his help
Don't be afraid to tell him that you want to show your appreciation.
Just say, "I would like to give you something for your time, but I really don't know what's fair."
I would imagine he knows you aren't made of money, and you both benefit even if you only give him $40. In today's market we all need to help each other.🤗

@UnderLockDown I agree 40 to 50 is nice

I think $50 would be good

I've done this sort of thing before for a distant relative and typically she would give me $20-40. My best guess is if you called a licensed plumber you would be paying at least $75-100 to get one to show up.
I do things like that for people all the time, and I never expect to get paid. It's a very easy and straightforward job. Also, I enjoy helping people. It gives me a sense of purpose.

If someone wants to give me a few bucks for a job like that - $10 - $15 - no more than $20 for my time - that's fine with me, if they're insistent on compensating me.

That's nice that you would want to help him out, financially. I'd say, pay him whatever you feel comfortable with. I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

He said that I didn’t need to pay him
Perhaps just a nice present to demonstrate your appreciation?

@ArtieKat well I did tell him straight up that I would pay him lol I didn’t wanna go back on that

$100 seems fair

@Muthafukajones @Zeuro sorry I wasn’t around to respond. Absolutely. That’s perfectly fine

You could follow it up another time with like an Irish Tea Cake or something like that. Very inexpensive and easy to make. Not much time at all and he’ll love it

@Zeuro did he accept the $50?
Zeuro · 26-30, F
@come2gether yes, he did, though when he saw the amount I sent him on cashapp he was like “are you sure?”
Gringo · 46-50, M
I’d say buy him a case of beer if he drinks or a meal.

$100? Dinner, sex?
I mean I've fixed a toilet for a friend before...I wouldn't accept payment...they paid for dinner and drinks that night which is more than enough. If you are insistent on paying that sounds like a 20 dollar job. That'd be the friend rate haha

A nice dinner
$20 would be appropriate.Thats a very easy fix, much easier than replacing the water seal where you have to take the entire toilet off.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Don't you think you should have worked all this out in advance?
tfan123 · 46-50, M
$50 sounds good and cook him his favorite dish 🙂👍

A box of chocolates?

100 bucks. You'd probably pay a plumber much more. I imagine you're buying the parts(seat, fill valve, whatever)?
