The annual profits of the Crown Estate (the monarch's hereditary possessions) are kept by the government and in most years exceed the sovereign grant paid back to the monarch. So in theory there is no direct cost to the British taxpayer.

@quietwhispers101 I think you misunderstand the UK. The Sovereign and the Prince of Wales pay tax on a voluntary basis, they are not obliged to but have an agreement to do so.
