It turns out that the new barmade at what once was a lovely pub is Australian!!

When I heard the news I had to go and investigate. She isn't just Australian, she's [u]very[/u] Australian. By which I mean loud.

Also she has an eyebrow pierced. I'm willing to give her a chance but I don't have high expectations.

But she did get my order right and was the equivalent of polite if you are Australian so perhaps there's a glimmer of hope. Time will tell.

For some reason this reminds me of the time in a San Francisco restaurant that we ordered a bottle of wine and the waiter went off to get it. An extraordinary amount of time went by, and finally a waitress came with our bottle of wine and told us in this lovely British accent that the waiter had had so much difficulty opening the bottle he quit his job and they had to call her in to finish the shift. I made some crack about all the way from Britain? And she said, I'm originally from Britain but went to Ceylon to tutor kids in English. Married a Tamil and had to seek asylum here. At the time I was doing some work on the use of educational theater, turned out she had used puppets to help tutor her English students, and we had a lovely conversation throughout the evening which more than made up for waiting for the wine. Which I guess is a long way of saying, there are advantages to broadening one's knowledge base with foreign pub staff.

@dancingtongue Travelling up and down the East coast of Oz we ran into dozens of young internationals here on working Visaa (pre pandemic) working as wait staff barristas and shop assistants, while having a year travelling. Talking and listening to them was like an international holiday in itself. 😷

@whowasthatmaskedman One usually associates international workforce with the tech and scientific fields (at least here in the U.S. where those work visas are easier to get). But you're right about the hospitality field, and seasonal work. In New Zealand at a winery the person conducting the tasting was an intern from a Boston culinary school. Not exactly the travel experience we were expecting.

@dancingtongue Here a lot do casual short term work, and move regularly to see the country. Travelling between melbourne and Cairns. over 2000 km. But thats all dead right now of course.😷

I would like to add that I am not prejudice against people from Australia. I just don't think they should work in Castle Combe. At least not in a role in which they're exposed to the public.
