I am glad you are proud of your Indigenous heritage and spirituality! And yes, a lot of argumentative atheists seem to assume that "God" means some old-man-in-the-sky that only the most naive Christians actually believe in. To me, a lot of how we express ourselves about what is really real, is symbolic or metaphorical. I think often atheists and people of faith would actually find they agree completely if they weren't each insisting on their own language and symbols.

@Ynotisay Do any of us have language to fully express the really real though? Does a word like "supernatural" really capture it?

@Ynotisay Afterlife does not exist in all religions. Conversely there are atheists who believe in an afterlife. What you're arguing for is more scientism than atheism. You're putting your faith in science so that presumably if science demonstrated that there IS a God, you'd believe in Him.

@SW-User I know a couple of atheists who firmly believe in an afterlife. They just think the CEO seat is vacant.

@Ynotisay Unitarian Universalists?? Satanist Temple?
If you read the very interesting book Society Without God you'll encounter thoughtful atheists who believe in an afterlife.
You are setting up a lot of definitions like hedges around your own way of looking at the world. It is, however, just one way of looking at the world.

@SW-User Come on now. You didn't really hold up those two as examples, did you? Unreal. And no. Atheists DO NOT believe in an afterlife. If you want to get in to the jack off word game there's classifications for that.
You're purposefully missing the point. And I'd say your screen name has a little to do with that. And did I say there weren't different ways of looking at the world? No. What I said is ALL RELIGIONS "look at the world" with some form of the afterlife being a part of it. Unitarian Universalists? That's a made up religion where people who need direction go and many do believe in an after life. Satanist Temple? Is it really a religion or is it Atheists out to disprove religions?
But out of curiosity, why do you care what I think? It's not about what I think. It's what "is." And therein lies the real essence of it all.

@Ynotisay Another recent thread mentioned the "True Scotsman Fallacy" and that seems to be what you're indulging in here. All REAL religions believe in life after death. Those that don't, aren't really religions. No REAL atheists believe in life after death; those who do, aren't really atheists. Only, who put you in charge of defining what's a real religion and who's a real atheist?
Many people are turned off by the dogmatism often found in religion. I have suggested a way beyond dogmatism: to see all these statements of belief as symbolic or metaphorical. It seems to me that you're insisting on dogmatic scientism. OK. I will drop out of this conversation now and let you have the last word.

@SW-User My last words are 'I'm done.' There's not much I find less interesting than "believers." Too much ego for me. Have a good one.

@Ynotisay You’re a racist reported. Stop criticizing other cultures.

@Peaceandnamaste Here's how it works little Ms. Faux Outrage. YOU don't get to tell ME what to think or say. And a racist? I'll write this slowly so you get it. Screw. You. At the very least maybe you can spend some time learning the difference between culture and religion. Might help you out the next time you stomp your feet for attention over nothing.

@Ynotisay I just heard a fascinating lecture by British sociologist Abby Day in which a recurring topic was that many atheists (people who do not believe in God) that she has interviewed in depth, believe in communication with the dead, afterlife, sometimes reincarnation.

Nope. Being prejudiced against a religion doesn't make you a racist. Do please educate yourself.-Shadowfire
