What causes a person to become selfish?

reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M Best Comment
my conclusion about this topic is that any voluntary behavior is an attempt to improve one's homeostasis and general wellbeing. even someone acting "selflessly' does so because he believes in altruism and acting acording to his values makes him feel good. makes HIM feel good. so the only possible altruism requires a detour, if someone believes in helping others then by doing so he feels good and by not doing so he feels bad. its all about improving how he feels and there is no way around it because its just the basic of behavior motivation on a neurological level.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Coralmist all behavior depends on a pre-established set of priorities, a value system is a system that establishes these priorities. if others are believed to be important then the behavior will reflect this. if a compassionate person sees a person, child or animal in need, doing nothing will be unbearable, on the contrary, he will be possessed with a desire to urgently come to their needs. so because of his system of values one behavior is then more pleasant than the other. in other words doing nothing would cause psychological suffering while doing something will feel "right".because of this altruism does exist but absolute altruism doesn't and would actually make no sense.

@reflectingmonkey Wise wise wise. You break down human motivation well.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@SW-User thank you. one day many years ago I was wondering about motivation and as a thought experiment I asked myself " why is there behavior? why don't we just sit down and remain immobile until we die?". answering that answers many questions.

Being alive.
@SW-User Truth.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@SW-User I agree with this
TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User Yes good point. Being alive is like survival of the fittest.
InHeaven · F
Born that way
TessDun · 36-40, F
@InHeaven Yes also upbringing but some siblings differ in behavior some are generous others are selfish
RebelFox · 36-40, F
Humans are cognitive, our worlds are perceived and focused inward. Now theres so many of us nobody gets enough attention, not enough community, too much division. We're spiraling.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@RebelFox True, being deprived of love and attention can make a person protective and it’s hard to give what one has not received enough.
kentex35 · 100+, M
Meanness sometimes, survival instinct, maybe paranoia or learned behavior. The very wealthy and moderately wealthy seem to be the toughest. Guess they didn't get rich by giving it away. They do make great contributions/donations but most of those seem to go to the arts than say the homeless. Taxes go(somewhat) to the needy and the wealthy don't like taxes so they donations to non profits that they may enjoy. And they actually make money from those donations in the form of write offs. Imo
TessDun · 36-40, F
@kentex35 I wonder if they could ever relate to someone in need, or they lack so much empathy. Many of rich people struggles are just very unrelatable.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@TessDun you're right.
carpediem · 61-69, M
I've heard of wizards turning people into shellfish. But then nothing surprises me these days
TessDun · 36-40, F
@carpediem True enough😉
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
Some have selfish parents, some are spoiled rotten as kids and were never taught to be considerate of others
TessDun · 36-40, F
@Jenny1234 Sadly it’s true
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
They were already selfish or they were mistreated for being too nice
TessDun · 36-40, F
@Rolexeo Yah,, the ones I see as really selfish are those who have so much but still very calculating. True also that sometimes kindness is abused caused by selfishness of others
SW-User
Self preservation
TessDun · 36-40, F

@BluntSm0ker ohh no
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
Poor parenting. Lack of morals. Entitlement. Lack of consequences. Privileged backgrounds financially or socially, etc.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@GeistInTheMachine True, a lot of causes. Also not receiving enough love and attention while growing up can really mess someone up
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@TessDun Yup. I have seen this first hand.

That's where Borderline comes from.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@GeistInTheMachine Yes, same here :( Building that stable emotional foundation through healthy self-love will be worth it.
SW-User
We're selfish by nature... the better question is to how overcome it. Just sayin'....
SW-User
@InHeaven Yep!
TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User Maybe by being genuinely happy from within
SW-User
@TessDun Can't really do that on your own though.

TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User thanks for pointing that out, agreed, it can’t be rooted in a single cause
SW-User
We do not become, we are, it's a part of our DNA. Some just take to a whole new level.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User Yes for self preservation and yes sadly there is a different level
SW-User
@TessDun With humans it's always about self. It's the way it is. We fool ourselves thinking we do things for others. Even if we do, it's to be liked or feel good.
SW-User
Having nothing.
SW-User
@TessDun That's the best time to share and give what you do have anyway.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User there is always the fear of losing the little one has without any support in return, but yah,, it’s the good side of being human, those who have good hearts and have the same struggles can easily sympathize and help
SW-User
@TessDun Sometimes the most valuable things aren't material at all.
SW-User
them not meeting their own dreams and desires
TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User Yes it’s the feeling of being inadequate enough from within making it hard to be sufficient for others
SW-User
@TessDun precisely
Children are often selfish. They are their own world, but usually with guidance and maturity, most outgrow it. Not all, alas.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@bijouxbroussard usually but it's not like 90% that do. I wonder if it learned behavior or a survival technique or jealousy and meanness.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard Agreed, how parents guide them at a young age is very important
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
Its just a mind-set that develops for whatever reason...you put your needs first. Ive noticed a lot of couples that dont have kids for whatever reason tend to be on the selfish side...i think having kids teaches you to be more unselfish than you would otherwise be.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Politicians
TessDun · 36-40, F
@nedkelly Yes a lot of them
Iwillwait · M
Human nature.
TessDun · 36-40, F
@Iwillwait agreed
AngelKrish · 26-30, M
First thing is some people are naturally selfish...
And other people who got broken down by other people by cheating, betrayals,lies backstabbing...make them change themselves..

I am broken one but not selfish..
TessDun · 36-40, F
@ImRileyTheDog Yes and lack of it
TessDun · 36-40, F
@Spokeskitties75 They don’t want to share
SW-User
Only have themselves to think about … no other commitments. Not a bad thing unless being selfish becomes toxic from vanity overload
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Need and desperation can morph into selfishness. So can overindulgence.
Look in the mirror if you you can
Upbringing ? Insecurity ? Immaturity ?

Maybe we are just wired that way.
We start off life perceiving ourselves as the centre of our universe.

Its not till after the age of about 6(?) We start to expand our thinking to others.

Maybe some never get the chance to learn to be anything else ?
TessDun · 36-40, F
@OogieBoogie True. Also it seems reasons change based on one’s life status. But there are just naturally selfish . Human nature is complicated
@TessDun ugh , yeah we are.

And you're right, if one has lead a privileged life, they can often have never had the chance to learn.

From as early as one year of age we can have experiences that cause us to learn to be selfish - it's emotional self defence mechanism.
SW-User
They don't care about others
TessDun · 36-40, F
@SW-User They don’t :(

@Darksideinthenight2 I don’t get the reason why those who have so much tend to be less generous.
