How would you rate your memory?

Your ability to retain information? My 12 year old brother suffers from autistic spectrum conditions as well as savant syndrome. Upon asking him this morning where we should eat breakfast he recited in its entirety, the menu including price of a Denny's restaurant.
Wow thats impressive!

I can remember when I was a baby, a toddler, the horrible teenage years, and mostly everything else. I wish I didn't have a good memory sometimes. 😒

@BlondilyOld The memory. Endlessly twisted and entwined in the good as well as the bad. A blessing and a curse.
So true!@CodyCode
NiftyWhite · 46-50, F
probably an 8. my hubby is like a 3. sometimes i think he is on the spectrum too as he can remember the chemical make up of the thin atmosphere on mars or anything about space. But he lacks in functional memory of conversations, people he’s met, places we have been. It’s perplexing.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@NiftyWhite Perplexing how retention takes place in our brain. Like your husband perhaps my brother can become lost and disoriented in our backyard yet knows the Gettysburg Address from memory.
NiftyWhite · 46-50, F
@CodyCode Yeah there’s not a lot of answers about that. My brother has an intellectual disability and can remember trivial facts about sports and cars but can’t remember what assets he owns.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@NiftyWhite Absolutely fascinates me. Bless him.

Pretty cool, isn't it?

I don't believe in limiting a child or our expectations of what can be learned.. they will surprise us most times. lol
Science, quotes from games, math... I am surprised at how much one child with some autistic signs can do so much memorizing!

Your brother has more surprises in store for you I'm sure! :)
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@SW-User A warm open outlook you have. He certainly amazes me each day is ways I'm unable to find words for.
Aussieman · 56-60, M
I can relate to thst I can remember stuff as far back as 3 yrs old
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
I worked in a school once and there was a boy with autism we were chatting with. We were talking about something we learned in class on a certain day several years back and he told us he didn’t remember because he was off that day. When we checked attendance records, he truly wasn’t there that day.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@DoubleRings Truly remarkable, the power and intrinsic possibilities our minds possess.
thisgenericnamehere · 36-40, M
The bizarre part, and this is not to take away from your brother, is that anyone with a healthy brain can actually do the same thing, you just have to learn how.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@thisgenericnamehere I absolutely agree. It's our mind as we can possibly control its function. That learning part you mention certainly remains the key for sure.
thisgenericnamehere · 36-40, M
@CodyCode There is a really good book, Moonwalking with Einstein that is about this sort of thing.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@thisgenericnamehere Interesting. A fan of his.

My short term memory is awful my long term memory is much better ..

Kids on the spectrum are quite amazing
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@SW-User Interesting. " Their world" has taught me much about how I see my own.

Props to your chosen occupation. Much respect. I live and care for one. 🙂
SW-User
@CodyCode of course everyone has their own personality and interests..it's interesting to learn

I have so much respect for anyone caring for a child with special needs of any kind ...
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@SW-User Indeed lots of twists and turns along our individual paths. A gift to discover .

As you, Ive respect for the blessing of being able to do so. Shared insight with another a gift as well.

May I thank you...for that.

🙂
Depends, I couldn't tell you I just know where I put my focus tends to stick with me forever.

like childhood phone number? 503 648 9461.

Still remember that. That was almost 30 years ago.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@BetweenKittensandRiots Amazes me how some things, regardless of their significance find a way to stick around in pur minds.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
I have a fairly good long term memory but half the time I don’t remember what I did over the weekend.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@Jenny1234 Interestingly enough I fall in the same boat.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
I think your brother is brilliant
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@Jenny1234 I as well. Although he may find basic function a challenge, Ive been blessed with some of the most amazing interactions in my life with him. A 12 year old.
Manfredthemanic · 16-17, M
Yes, I have a photographic memory as well. 😊
Manfredthemanic · 16-17, M
@CodyCode Yes, but it annoys a lot of people, so I'm glad you love your brother for his mind.
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@Manfredthemanic Perhaps it remains the " lot of people" as well as their opinions we need not find concern in.
Manfredthemanic · 16-17, M
@CodyCode Yes, I know. 😊
REMsleep · 41-45, F
Wow. I would totally use him for various recall info.
So cool. Take care of him
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@REMsleep The best I can provide is his as long as he requires it I assure you.
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
Like a goldfish
CodyCode · 36-40, M
@SkeetSkeet Flakes from above are indeed most pertinent on my mind as well.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
The character in Rain Man was an autistic savant.

Certain things stick in my mind, but others things slide off into the abyss.

Dates stay in my mind for some reason.
