Since Americans, like all people of all nationalities, are human beings, I find them to be human.
They respond well to other people who are kind and friendly, and they don't respond well to other people who are sneering, snotty, and who feel themselves to be superior while not actually filling the bill.
They are either critical or forgiving, they love to gossip, they can be either lazy or insanely competitive or something in between. Just humans...with all the human flaws and angelic stars...(and stripes). 🤣

They generally fall into two categories.
The well informed, open minded. With whom you can converse and discuss and the indoctrinated opinionated. With whom you can't because whatever it is is etched in their DNA (or so they'll tell you) as either fact or God given right despite the distinct lack of evidence for either.

How do you reconcile being emphatic with tolerance - since to be emphatic is to be forceful? Or do you mean empathetic? Maybe i'm getting the definitions mixed up

All types, but I'm not happy with the ones I've been with. I've met some cool Americans but always as a passing stranger, on the outside looking in.
