Or a Days Inn...seriously, I couldn't do without air conditioning in the summer.

@pelman0011 I have had to since I moved in here. The complex just has so many individual units, and when they are gone, they are gone. Plus an extra $50.00 added to your monthly rent.
pelman0011 · 56-60, M
@MaryJanine Wow! Yes...we may need them in some areas, but they are expensive.
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@pelman0011 Tell me about it, I have heard prices from $100.00 to $400.00. Of course I don't want a Frigidaire model ( I have a studio unit) but when it gets HOT in midafternoon when the sun comes around, it gets HOT.
I've never been a fan of air conditioning..spreads too many bugs. Had to vent that.
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@Ironicman If it gets too hot and humid, I can't bear the weather. Two weeks ago, it was 90-plus with over 105 humidity and I spent the day sleeping because I don't have an AC - just fans.
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@Ironicman It doesn't spread bugs if you change the filter regular and keep it clean. When I was at home and we had A/C and in my first apartment with an A/C which I donated to my younger brother, that was de rieguer. We never had any bugs with ours. Bugs mean you are not keeping clean.
FairyGirlGemma · F
I've got 2 fans going right now.
If it gets hotter I'ma go to sleep in my car with the AC on full.

My worry is losing power. We have a generator in this building, but it will only operate the lights in the lobbies on each floor and emergency power for the elevator. It actually caught on fire recently due to a short, and has been repaired...but...
Since we are in the midst of hurricane season, I gave some thought to what I would do in this oven of an upper floor apartment if we lost power for one day or longer, so recently I bought 2 10" battery powered fans and 24 batteries. It's really bad here in this building without ac. I've seen people sitting in their cars with the motor running and the ac on.

@Nimbus I am not sure what the people on oxygen do in those cases. I used to know someone on oxygen, and I never found out if her apartment was powered by the emergency generators.
There are quite horrible community shelters available if the outage is of long duration. You can't bring your pets, and you sleep on army cots in barnlike conditions.Perhaps they can go there?
I was so fortunate that I was able to survive four days without power during our last great winter storm. I worked at a nursing home during that time, and I was able to take a shower in the morning in the workers area in the basement.

@4meAndyou They might have portable oxygen packs that are run by batteries for when they need to leave home & be able to rely on that for awhile.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I’ve got ceiling fans in 3 rooms & 3 other fans to use too. Also could go out to the sun room at night and sleep with the windows open if need be. If I couldn’t afford to get it replaced for awhile I’d buy a small window unit to use till I could. People were doing that in 2011 when we had a record-breaking hot summer. Walmart sold a bunch of small window units.

@Nimbus If you rent it from manageement, yes,it is. But they go so fast, by the time you realize they are giving them out, they are gone. They only have so many anyhow - or you have to buy your own, which isn't cheap.

@MaryJanine 👍
Keepitsimple · 56-60, F
I would buy a window unit. I’m not going without air conditioning now. I’m too old.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Keepitsimple Same with me. It’d be easier to tolerate having no a/c if we all lived mild climates or out in rural areas with a body of water nearby that has a cooling effect when the breezes blow over it. And old houses used to be built to let air circulate through the house when the very long windows that went down to the floor were open.

The storm came from Iowa and tore up most of northwestern Illinois. Trees came down, cables were snapped - and the entire complex I lived in went out of power (five floors).
Nimbus · M
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@Nimbus ComEd has been at it day and night, but they said it might be Saturday before they make any progress. Luckily, our building went back on power (except for the laundry room, which was still out this morning).
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@Nimbus You might like to know that, due to Monday's storm, the entire city of Harvey is STILL in the dark without power, lights, or generators. Some of these people are oldsters, too. I saw newsreels and the place looks like a drunken jungle gym. Poles and trees everywhere, cars crushed under forestry. You name it, they had it (broken).
being · 36-40, F
I don't use it, i put my mattress just in front of a window and i'm lucky enough to get a summer breeze most of the nights..daytime i suck it up till i get the chance to take relief from a swim in the sea, shower or last solution, put my head under water(that works 99%of the times of excessive heat!)
raysam363 · 31-35, F
Pro tip: Ceiling fans are wonderful. Also a little container of cold water for your feet.
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@raysam363 I have a ceiling fan, and it doesn't do much for heat.
raysam363 · 31-35, F
@MaryJanine It can take around 10 degrees off, but high humidity is mostly immune to it.
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@raysam363 I can live with heat - it's the humidity which kills me.
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
Ask the people whose power went out when the tornado went through their area the other night.

@MaryJanine Oh, where was that?
