After someone dies and they still had a house and assets, what’s the very next step after the funeral?

I am an executor - so is a sister. What’s do I do next. Seriously have no idea.

You will need to get copies of the death certificate. Notify anyplace they are currently getting an income from and provide them with a copy of the death certificate. Notify the financial institutions they use. Consult with an attorney but since the will states you and your brother are to execute the estate you should be able to handle most of it. I had the same situation I was in charge of the settling of the estate even though I had a brother it was me alone. Be patient, it takes time to get things settled. It took me about 15 - 16 months to get everything settled. I hope you have the authority to write checks on their checking accounts because that will save you a lot of time and money.

The solicitor should guide you

Get in touch with an estate lawyer and let the lawyer do the heavy lifting. You likely will need one anyways since probating a will over a certain dollar amount requires it.

what do you mean heavy lifting? @hippyjoe1955

@DoubleRings There are legal requirements that might trip you up as you try to probate the will. It very much depends on the situation. I probated my father in law's will which was very simple. He had everything joint with his wife and so everything simply went to her. My mother left everything to her children and it took two years to sort it all out with the services of a good lawyer. It was a very simple will but because it was over the base line of value we had to involve a lawyer. No one contested the will so.... Now we are doing the same with my mother in law's estate. Her financial assets don't present a challenge but she owned real estate and wanted that to be divided up disproportionately.

You will need an attorney . Deciding on What to do with the assets is up to you ...but documents must be filed with the court regarding the distribution and new ownership of those assets

You divide and conquer if it’s the both of you. You need a copy of the death cerficate first.

Contact the probate judge’s office and the clerk will walk you through it. Depending on details you may need an attorney or you may feel more comfortable hiring one. Get at least 10 copies of the death certificate.

Gather in the assets and distribute them according to the will. There are some formalities and as others have suggested, a lawyer could help.

You will need to work with a probate attorney. Just follow the attorney's instructions.

Two executors?

Get death certificates. Start notifying ALL companies... banks first.
