To be right, obviously. I'm fucking happy to lose an argument if it means learning that I was ignorant and being able to correct it.

Being right and five bucks will get you a cup of coffee.

Now that is a difficult question. If you win in the sense that you take over political power, then for most of human history you could force your subjects and/or conquered people to admit that a fact was a lie. If you threaten people with death or the death of their families, most people will say that 2+2 = 5 if you tell them to reply "5".
On the other hand, reality is reality. Nobody wins against reality. Earth rotates around the sun regardless of what the Roman Catholic clergy were preaching. Command economies do not work as well as freet market economies regardless how many people the Communists killed, imprisoned or humiliated.

Being right is more important to me. I want to be on the right side of the issue, and I can respect myself for that even though I might lose.
More like is it better to be right or to be happy?
@lancashirelady50 Because when arguing, ask yourself that question. Bet your response is happy.
lancashirelady50 · 70-79, F
@CereBellum are you suggesting that discussing/arguing is never a positive state To be in?
@lancashirelady50 No, I never said or even implied that. “”Discussing“ really is a necessity. However it shouldn’t be a “game” of who’s right or wrong.

If it’s politics it’s the win. Who cares about being right?
lancashirelady50 · 70-79, F
@jackson55 yes, it is the conquerors who write the history books!

To be right but if you know your right you need to do your best to win .

To win through mob mentality seems to be most people's choice, really. You could argue that 2+2 = 4, but if the other person wishes to make out you are an ist or a phobe, or just a bad person in general, for saying 2+2=4 then all that matters is that and convincing as many people as possible that you are those things, facts don't matter. People are hedonists and want to feel morally superior and popular.

@Inanna If you engage in a situation with even the slightest level of objectivity, open mindedness and fairness each side will brand you an evil person. It goes quite extreme too. One time I merely commented on someone's post about saving money at a discount store to say "you'd save more money buying unbranded drink" and I was told that I hate disabled people, poor people and the NHS. Despite having a disability treated by the NHS and being poor. Another had a problem with me because I didn't support violence against political personalities she didn't like and had the approach of "well lets look at this evidence too". She ended up calling me a racist and a sexist. And I have a partner of a different race.
