Dinner and supper are generally synonymous when referring to a meal in the evening. However, dinner can be considered by some to be a somewhat more formal word. In chiefly British English, supper can also refer to a light meal or snack that is eaten late in the evening.
Not even going to pretend I didn't copy and paste that. :D

Dinner can sometimes be lunch. Supper can't.
In most parts of the United States and Canada today, "supper" and "dinner" are considered synonyms (although supper is a more antiquated term). In Saskatchewan, and much of Atlantic Canada, "supper" means the main meal of the day, usually served in the late afternoon, while "dinner" is served around noon.

Sunday dinner, in my family, was one of our only formal meals. It was usually served in the afternoon, after church. It was usually ham or roast beef, potatoes and veggies.
The evening meal was always called supper, and it was served whenever my father came home from work on weekdays, or around 5:30 p.m. These meals were informal, and usually involved hamburgers, hot dogs, leftovers, meatballs or other really awful things my mother used to make.

When I was growing up, it was: dinner, tea (high tea), and supper. I never ate supper, which was served around 8-8:30 pm. Now, it’s lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.

That depends on where you come from. In one place they are the same thing(the main meal of the day) and somewhere else it’s a snack with a drink mid evening
