People that are entrenched in their beliefs, be it religious, political, social, or otherwise, already have their minds made up about the world before getting any facts. They live by the fallacy of reaching a conclusion first and then working backwards to collect evidence confirming that conclusion. People are notoriously bad at separating their beliefs from their identity, and will make and defend outrageous claims to protect their fragile egos
