Are you aware that you can be penalised for not having fluid in a vehicle's screen washer bottle?

It's common sense that you make sure you do but I wasn't aware it was an offense if it was empty. You learn something every day. Just a bit of trivia.

WOW!😯I've never heard such a thing before?!
Zoranna · F
@Peaches Neither had I. It seems common sense to me to do so and I usually add a tiny bit of washing up liquid to the mix to make sure the windscreen is clean.

Overdid it one day and the whole car got washed haha; luckily I found out my mistake in my driveway. We live and learn and I'm always learning! 😄
Peaches · F
@Zoranna That's true...life certainly is for learning!😆
That's completely fair. If your unfit to keep your vehicle in top operating order you shouldn't be driving. People's lives depend on that vehicle being in complete control. Wiper fluid is a simple thing to check if someone can't tent to that then they're lacking in responsibility.
Zoranna · F
@MrFreeeeeze I agree and I wasn't implying it was unfair. It's not only simple to ensure your vehicle has wiper fluid it's basic common sense. I just hadn't known it was a finable offense.
@Zoranna 😳 I was just saying to your post. Definitely not implying you bring one of those people 🤗🤗
Zoranna · F
@MrFreeeeeze Cheers. 🥂 :-)

I didn't know that and my bottle is empty!

Also worth a mention, the horn.

Rule 112 of the Highway Code states: “Never sound your horn aggressively. You must not use your horn while stationary on the road, or when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30pm and 7am, except when another road user poses a danger.” The potential punishment is a £1000 fine.

Have a horn free day! Practically impossible on UK roads nowadays
Zoranna · F
@Ironicman Bet it's not empty now. 😉 Yes, the horn rules apply here too. Thanks, fortunately I usually have a horn free day, apart from "Devil made me do it" moments. 🤭

So never use it so it doesn’t run out....is that an offense "
fun4us2b · M
@Zoranna I think the statute reads "washer must contain fluid - however driver may be an airhead"
Zoranna · F
@fun4us2b Your "statute", I'm Australian. Common sense I thought but I've come to realise that "common sense" is not that common. 😉
fun4us2b · M
@Zoranna Yes, why call it "Common Sense" It seems to be Globally "uncommon"
BalmyNites · F
Yes, that’s true it is an offence
BalmyNites · F
@Zoranna It’s simply another thing which a lot of people are ignorant of. Also, did you know it is an offence to use your mobile phone even while parked, if your engine is still switched on (Section 110, Road Vehicles Regulations) Carries 6 penalty points on your driving licence & a nice little fine of £2,500 if you are driving a bus, coach or lorry 😊 *Includes while stopped at lights & in traffic queues
Zoranna · F
@BalmyNites Yes, that applies in Western Australia also.
BalmyNites · F
@Zoranna That’s right, the constitutional framework of Australia is a combination of elements of the Westminster & US systems of government & at both the federal & State levels, the substantive law of Australia is mostly derived from the common law system of English law.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Is that in the UK?
Zoranna · F
@cherokeepatti Interesting. The police here can pull anyone over on the pretext of a vehicle check but I'd never heard of anyone being fined for that. Faulty wiper blades and bald tyres etc yes.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Zoranna Oh one thing that the city police here will ticket if they see you have a crack in the windshield, like a piece of gravel from a truck wheel that makes a little hole or crack. The glass man who repaired windshields for the car lot I used to work at told me that.
Zoranna · F
@cherokeepatti Yes, I was aware of that one. It applies here too.
"Oil leak" is a common one too and not many older cars pass that unscathed.
Rutterman · 46-50, M
Comes as news to me, but it might not be a requirement where I live.
Zoranna · F
@Rutterman Might not be, best to check though. I only know for sure it is in UK and Australia.
Cowboybob · M
The more you know....
Zoranna · F
@Cowboybob Yep!

MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M

Gumba1000 · M
@MartinTheFirst But you said to 0.8? That's even more illegal than 1.6
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
