A few misconceptions about Atheism

Writing this because I made a friend her early and lost him in less than 20 minutes as he went full out ballistic on me, making up ridiculous claims of being in the upper echelon of A Christian hierarchy. A direct voice for God. etc. Frustrating to try and have a friendly dialogue.

Atheist myths: Atheists are thus devil worshippers. Absurd. We don't believe in God thus neither a fallen angel, demons .etc

We have guidelines to follow for new converts. Not true, there is no structured rules or belief system required to follow. Each member forms his own brand of Atheism or debates with others then objectively decides independantly.

Atheist just haven't read the bible thus unable to form a relation to God. Truth is most all other Athiest once completely accepted the bibles teachings many like myself were baptised, even I taught bible study and know scripture sometimes better than Preachers or other God enlightened church leaders.

There is never an attempt to convert Christians to Atheism. We believe in free will. Most of us have come to our personal acceptance of Atheism by some kind of spiritual epiphany, that we need to revaluate our belief system.

We have no comprehensive list of what you call sins. Most of us believe in the Golden Rule and that it is WRONG to impose our beliefs on others without their stated, informed. Adult consent.

We try to respect other religious choices.

AND above all. The USA is NOT a Christian Nation as so many are saying. Our forefathers made ensurances that this nation is purely secular and that the Government must not attempt a state religion.

Being an Atheist does not need a bible to establish moral values. Civilizations for centuries determind moral values whic are already most hardwired into our brains

Thanks for those who took the time to peruse this. Basically we just want to be left alone and like you, attempt to teach our childrem (without) clerical intervation the most
humane and diverse people promoting Agape love, Tolerance, and appitite for finding their own way in an era of so much hatred and intolerance.

Thanks, David.

I've called myself over my lifetime a Christian, an atheist, a militant agnostic (but no one got that gag) and just non-believer.

One of the most interesting discussion I had was with a very Christian lady a Northern Irish Catholic as it happens. We were discussing humanism and existentialism. She expressed real concern if people didn't believe they would be judged by God at the end of their lifetime that they wouldn't lead a life of sin and excess.

I explained my position for most of my life is that I don't believe in some power that will judge me at my life's end and decide heaven or hell. I don't personally believe in an afterlife like that or in the concepts of heaven & hell.

She was really puzzled and said "But if you don't have that why do you not just live a totally hedonistic lifestyle?"

I smiled and said "I choose to live a moral life as I believe it benefits me and my society. I don't need a God to force me to live that moral life. Unlike you. I wonder what you'll be like if you ever lost your faith."

She admitted she only "behaved" due to the hell threat. I thought that an awful way to be.
@SW-User Same question as I got. Since we started out millions of years before Jehovah determined whats naughty and nice. Tribes had to stablish basic moral guidelines for the people, tribes shared stories, hunted and lived a tolerable life.
(Cave paintings proved a love of art, and scenes of daily life.) They created pottery)

Hardly the lifestyle of irrational, mindless savages. Flash forward many thousands of years and god decides there needs to be rules, and oh my, what rules they were, constant smiting of entire towns. Random genocide, guideline for slaves, no shellfish, orders to stone folks working on Sunday etc.

NO! it was Priest and merchants who actually made these laws to suit themselves.
An all loving god who would have a man (nearly) to sacrifice his son as a show of loyality? a little hard to swallow. But the Priest/Merchants needed to keep the ordinary meek and in constant fear of the wraith of god.

Man without religion would have a moral compass by his common sense and need to remain at peace with the other tribes.

Morality would have evolved naturally same as it keeps evolving and changes today.

Thank you for a very well presented post.
@Bushranger I may get slaughtered here, but that guys brutal Christian attack on me drove me to respond. LOL I forgive him though, ignorant brainwasing is part and parcel of why we need to think INDEPENDANTLY and pass that to our children

@Grateful4you Quite possibly you will, but I certainly hope that you don't. Most Christians I know in real life are pretty open minded and don't get all that caught up in the whole Atheist bating shtick. Some on here, however, have some very strange and totally incorrect beliefs about Atheism.

@Grateful4you Love your profile, too.

I was raised as a Christian...but I am not a Christian. I do not agree fully with religious teachings of any faith, but I do believe that all religions do have some good things to offer and that we could all benefit from in them. Though I am not Christian nor am I religious, I do believe in what I perceive to be "God". I try to respect the beliefs of others even if I do not agree with or believe them myself, I have my opinions but mostly keep them to myself (or only share them with others who are on the same page as me). I will say that I have been attacked, insulted, and disrespected by many atheists because of what I believe on many occasions, just because I shared my beliefs and feelings/thoughts about certain subjects ( and I was not doing that to them for theirs). That all I have to say on the subject.
@indyjoe I've seen a few Athiest, especially on youTube that are arrogant, sneering as Christian callers call in. Possibly backlash from so many insults they have endured over the years, yet, still uncalled for. Many of the callers are sincerely curious and seeking truth. Moderators of Atheist panels need to be more empathetic, less caustic, afterall they were once the Christians being addressed.

@Grateful4you I have had it happen right here in SW before. I agree with what you said in your post, I was just saying that the respect should be mutual. I am not saying you were being that way, just saying I have seen it a lot.

Funny, it's these very people such as your short term "friend" that that push many people away from believing. And yes there are some very weird ideas on what atheists' are/do. I dare say someone will happily want to shoot you down but it's a good post.

Is it not easier, and impassioned, to know you live your life as your own? What other's feel is miniscule, immaterial, instead of lamenting upon it? I know my position is not the popular one here.
@SW-User It is both impassioned and living a genuine life to be proud of. My great ancestor John Hart (Declaration of Independence) who took a leap of faith by signing, but there were no parades or hoopla, in fact he had to run taking his family, hiding in caves til he finally made it down south, I only lament
the religious right wanting evolution taught in school, bible study (belongsat home) Mike Pense a radical right wing evangelical wants sex conversion thearpy for gays. It goes on and on. This country never was "Christian" but secular, but hell people don't care or are too stupid.
Trump thinks the constitution is "Stupid"...The mental instution is being running by the inmates. I'm a pacifist but will do whatever I can to be the country our forefathers wanted for us.

This post really calls for me to write a new one: Greater misconceptions about atheism. There was so much you didn't address here: more important things. Still, I commend you for giving your perspective.
ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
I know exactly what you mean because I was raised a certain way to understand you because you sound like my grandmother and I've been around society to understand other beliefs of my current generation today. I cant speak for them. Even though i feel your truth. I also hate to disagree. It's not my reason why. If this post where anywhere but SW, you'd get more responses with other opinionated feedback. I'm only here to listen, and observe.

i'm not a christian..i'm a Catholic😜 (joke) who agrees wth 99.5% of this i ..might have a point worth discussing some time..oh btw if this is a Christian nation i'm Benjamin Franklin

Atheist are more convicted to their belief than Christians. Christians have a pick and choose system to satisfy their personal lifestyle ie “ I know what the Bible says about fornication, but I have my needs, and besides, that was back in the olden days”. Remember that “ Kim” in Kentucky who had been married 4 times, but because of her Christian values could not give a marriage certificate to a same sex couple?

There is a simple twist in language and tolerance. What comes before us we don't know, we simply know we love, including our children, and move on?
@SW-User That and the so-called Golden Rule, reminding self NOT to impose YOUR will on others without their totally informed consent. The rest evolves as human wisdom agrees, new adaptions, or modified rules. No god needed.
SW-User
@Grateful4you Ahh but that needs not be said.
SW-User
Bravo David! From your favorite fellow Atheist ;)

@Grateful4you What if we were to wear striped shirts, black berets, and cigarette holders?
@SW-User I like the black berets for sure, cigarette holders are appropriate.
NO platforms shoes, we need serious butch black combat boots perhaps little silver tassels hanging down. We need to be both butch and metro sexual....Oh, I don't like a patterned shirt for combat, looks too corporate, how about olive green shirts and
a purple sash at the waist? A modest uniform.
SW-User
@Grateful4you Ooooh! I really like the silver tassel detail! Tres chic! Let's do THIS!
