How do you feel when someone younger tells what to do? Not trying to be mean but for me it’s like taking advice from a kid with special needs.

indyjoe · 56-60, M
I have had supervisors that were younger than me, my boss now is younger than me and it doesn't bother me at all. What does bother me is when I'm working with someone who is not just younger but ALOT younger, we are on the same level but I have been there longer, have more job experience, and also have more life experience and they try to tell me how to do my job and talk to me like I'm a kid....that boils my potatoes. I do respect anyone who knows more and has more experience than I do regardless of their age, I don't mind asking their guidance and advice even if they are younger...but I do expect them to give me the respect that I give them.

First of all, comparing someone with "special needs" people when it comes to taking advice/orders from a younger person is insulting, mean, and cruel. A person with special needs can't help themselves for being the way they are. Most of these individuals that I heard about are that way because of a lack of oxygen or some other difficulty during the birth process. Many of them bother no one intentionally and are sweet and loving.

That said - to the question of "someone younger telling you what to do". Depending on where you work and what you do, there will/may be times in your work life when you have to take instructions or orders from someone several years your junior. I know it happens. I have had several who were twenty years or better my junior, and when they gave me an order, it was my job to carry it out - that is, I wanted to keep getting a paycheck.

The work force is getting younger all the time. My not-quite-22-year-old nephew was just promoted to store manager at the same store both he and his 50-year-old mother works as a cashier. That means he has a set of keys, a 40-hour work week, and a badge proclaiming his title. It also means his mother needs to take orders from her own son when both are at work.

This doesn't seem fair to you, but this is the way the world is going and we have to accept certain things that we don't particularly care for.
Well they are probably thinking you have special needs and that's why you have to listen to them.

What’s age have to do with anything? I’m 40something and I advise my parents in making many important decisions.

@NiftyWhite Age is only a number. When my mom died (1984) my dad had no idea what do or how to do it. Thank God he had me and my younger brothers.

I've been getting that for most of my life! My one brother is 10 months my junior, but according to him, I know nothing and he knows everything. It's gotten to the point where I decide what's best for me and close the screen door on the rest.

I hate to break it to you BUT there is going to come a day when professionals are going to be younger than you. You won't be looking at them like they have "special needs" - which, by the way, is very offensive.

I manage some people nearly twice my age. If someone older than me doesn't want me telling them what to do then they can either do what's expected or get promoted :p
