The problem with this question is mostly that people don't anticipate being told that one costs a certain amount more than the other.
The question writer has to know the answer in order to create the question.
It's all a case of being given a specific set of information which wouldn't happen normally.

If you have the hat as 25$, you’ll figure out the price of the coat which is 125$ by adding 25 with 100 since the hat costed 100$ less than the coat. So now we know both prices of the hat and the coat respectively 25$ and 125$, we can go ahead and add them together to see if the result is the same as the sum mentioned in the question, which is 150$.
