I just came back from a holiday, and in one of the hotels there was a well-prepared book with the title "Seven reasons not to be a Christian - your arguments rebutted". As a devout atheist, I could not help trying to read its turgid prose. I was hoping (!) to find some meaty arguments which might call into question my view that there is zilch out there!
It was total crap. There wasn't a single 'fact'. It was all based on statements in a book written 2000- 3000 years ago, as if they were the end of all argument, plus how good you feel when you give yourself to Jesus! And, to the most obvious objection - how can an omnipotent, loving god cause tsunamis and cholera, etc, the answer was - as far I could understand - it's all man's fault.
No wonder churches in educated countries are rapidly emptying. All religions are, ultimately, for the naive and the under-educated

Christians are scared that if they examine their beliefs they will find them vacuous and without merit

No one should be asked to "provide evidence" to prove religious belief. I'm an atheist and I think the lowest thing any human being can do to another is try to take away their hope, even if you don't believe they're getting it from a source you don't approve.

@CallmeHopelessNotRomantic I only ask them to present what they claim to have. I don't go up to random christians demanding they prove their beliefs. Why claim to have evidence but then refuse to present it?
CallmeHopelessNotRomantic · 46-50, F
@suzie1960 it's obviously not tangible to them,so they go with it's in their heart. Most of these people have had these beliefs since childhood. And you know how most hold on to them in hard times. If they have anything getting them through bad times, I'm happy.

We don't need to prove our faith and I don't care what you do or don't believe. This is why I don't debate over religion.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@amvanquish That's good. My question relates to those evangelical types who try to force their beliefs onto others.
amvanquish · 51-55, M
That's the problem. They forget that Christianity is based on free will and grace@suzie1960
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@amvanquish When I was a christian I thought I had free will but it was really just an illusion. I was only free to obey the rules.

To those who believe no proof is necessary. To those who don't believe no proof is possible.

@suzie1960 I never have.
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@MasterDvdC Quite a lot do but, when asked to present it, they get all defensive.

I can only speak for myself.

I've told you in the past Suzie about the amazing things God has done in my life and all you did was reply by saying nasty things about ppl you met years ago. You can't prove God in a test tube or lab, you need faith,and yes the evidence is all around just look at the amazing sunsets we've had lately
suzie1960 · 61-69, F
@TheWildEcho What you call evidence of your god, others call evidence of theirs. The Wiccans I know say it's the work of The Great Mother. Their belief is just as valid as yours. I haven't closed my eyes to anything, I just no longer accept unsubstantiated claims without question.
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
@suzie1960 yes I know and thats why I never criticise anyone else's belief ,but share my experiences. That's what sites like this are for

@suzie1960 Suzie. You can never win an argument with someone who says "I believe" because, by definition, there is no substance behind it, but because they are human, and hate to be shown as wrong, or even tested, they will simply dig in harder. Apostasy is only a gift for the thoughtful, as no thinking person, in the 21st century, can possibly believe in the contradictory precepts of a small tribe of medieval wanderers, driven by superstition, and ignorant even that the earth is a sphere. And the idea that a christian justifies his faith on the prettiness of a sunset wholly ignores tsunamis, earthquakes, pandemics, childhood leukaemia, gas chambers, famines, and a zillion other nasties that make a few nice sunsets an immensely pathetic argument.

@TjNewton Each to their own.

The obvious answer is that they're lying, they don't have any evidence.
