What's the best place you've traveled to recently (and what made it a good place to visit)?

My boyfriend and I have been bumming around the Yucatan for the past month (specifically the Mexican states of Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo). I'd been to Mexico before, but never this part. The Yucatan is the safest part of Mexico and the states of Yucatán and Campeche are the only two Mexican states without any travel warnings from the U.S. government. The region is a warm, wet tropical rainforest area with ancient Mayan ruins, small colorful towns, and beautiful beaches with perfectly clear water. Nothing against Cancún, but I did not want to want stay in the big resort area (and I didn't come here for partying or drinking). There's so much more to see outside of the big, commercial tourist zones. It's sad that Mexico has so many problems with violence and kidnappings because there are so many reasons to see explore this country. I'll stick to the safer areas right now, but I hope I can see more of Mexico in the future. I will definitely be back.

Two photos I took in the ancient Mayan site of Calakmul:

last year I spent 6 weeks in the Yucatan, mostly in Bacalar. I just came back from Colombia just a few days ago, I was there for one month. It was ok. I love Cartagena, especially Getsamani area. colonial architecture, cobblestlone, narrow streets, flowers everywhere. amazing place. we spent most of our time near Santa Marta, between walking in the mountains and the jungle some days and other days going to the beach. My favorite place up tp now was Nepal but there was something about Getsemani that made me want to live there. the atmosphere is incredible.

@reflectingmonkey I went to Bacalar as well. I've never been to Colombia, but that sounds amazing, to find a place like that somewhere quite different from where you live and think you could live there.
