Do you like ‘gentrification’?

I think places are much better afterwards.
BlueVeins · 22-25
I like rich people moving in. I don't like poor people being priced out. Gentrification is only good if it's accompanied by an increase in housing density to counteract the affect on property values.

And even in cases of gentrification done wrong, I still don't blame the wealthy individuals moving in, unless those people are also against upzoning and alternative transportation.

Yes, I do agree with you. I just think those areas feel so much safer afterwards and I love upmarket bakeries, cafes, florists etc, they’re so charming to walk around.@BlueVeins

I like seeing the hybrids like old farmers markets and heritage in places with less crime and more services. Unfortunately it's usually a cycle where the heritage leaves to make way for the services. I have contributed somewhat by moving into this place but i hope that I can still respect what is already here

Yes, I do agree, it’s lovely when the history of a place is preserved.@Soph03

No, hate the idea and concept of it. Forcing, usually ethnic minorities (like myself), out of an area to bump up the prices and having, usually, quite affluent white people move in.

Shocking!
Strongtea · 22-25, M
But it does generally improve the area.@JasminD
Gentrification isnt new and without it we would still have the tenement slums that were disease ridden and generally unpleasant places to live
Strongtea · 22-25, M
Yep, I agree@CheekyBadger

It is the natural thing. More advanced displacing the less advanced, nature does it all the time.

better for whom?
Strongtea · 22-25, M
I suppose being well off exposes you to good taste therefore we like nice things. We tend to care more about our appearance I think. We don’t wear cheap awful clothes like certain groups of people (chavs lol!)@ninalanyon
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Strongtea If that is the case then wouldn't you improve the view, even if nothing else, by making the poor better off?
Strongtea · 22-25, M
That is actually a very good point. @ninalanyon
Gentrification has done nothing but push long established Minority families out of their homes, so that hipsters can have their trendy pad thai restaurants in former inner city neighborhoods.
@Strongtea How many of them are paycheck to paycheck poor or living on the dole, hmmm?
Strongtea · 22-25, M
Probably quite a lot, but that will be for white folks too.@NativePortlander1970
@Strongtea Did you not watch that clip from Boys in the Hood? Gentrified areas were pretty much once Minority neighborhoods that got taken over by rich lumosine liberals and hipsters, very, very few white people lived in them before gentrification.
