Yes it did take courage. Things can go haywire quickly in isolated areas….severe storms, blizzards, hostile territory, floods, wild animals, horse runs aways etc. Not to mention roving criminals (highway robbery).

@cherokeepatti The first encounter between white explorers and a Grizzly Bear. 🐻

@ProfessorPlum77 I watched a video of a grizzly bear chasing a herd of wild horses. I didn’t know they could keep up with horses.

@cherokeepatti They are pretty fast. I know they can outrun an elk.

Yes, I channel that indomitable spirit every time I search the basement or garage for some elusive article.
Deep In its canyons of towering boxes, threatening collapse, with a failing light; it's as if Lewis & Clark are right at my side.

Even more courageous were the early voyagers like the Vikings; or those who first explored the Polar regions and the highest mountains.
Nevertheless, the pioneers like Lewis, Clark and Boone were taking on very serious projects; venturing on foot or horseback into unknown country.
I don't how long it took to cross the continent even after the routes had been established by various explorers; generally uphill for much of the way Westwards. They must have been very unpleasant, mainly dreary but always hazardous journeys though, and I understand there were many graves along those old trade-routes.

How about the explorers that jumped on a ship and traveled the world hundreds of years ago?
That seems like it would be the most dangerous.
